  2. What did he do? • Revolutionary • Heavily involved in

    the Gaelic Revival • Founder of the Gaelic League • Involved with forming the Irish Volunteers • Largely non-violent • Eventually, he was sentenced to life in prison. • He was let back out of prison in 1917.
  3. History • Promoted the Gaelic Revival • Started in 1839

    • Was a bit of an oddity in that it let in women, and gave them equal footing from the start. • Was apolitical, but in 1915, it became semi-political. • A lot of revolutionaries met through the Gaelic League.
  4. Revolutionary • Wrote "The North Began" • Led to the

    creation of the Irish Volunteers. • The Irish Volunteers were largely nonviolent. • They were armed, but wouldn’t fight unless the British conscripted, attacked, arrested the leaders of, or attempted to disarmed them.
  5. The Easter Rising • The Irish Republican Brotherhood attempted to

    circumvent MacNeill’s control to go offensive while Britan was largely concerned with WWI. • MacNeill managed to find out ahead of time, and managed to limit the scope of the rising. • The rising was a failure, many of the volunteers were arrested. • Shortly after, the Irish Volunteers became the IRA.
  6. What is the consequence of all of this? • MacNeill

    can be seen as having an influence what Ireland has become. • One of the first prominent faces in the modern study of Irish medieval history. • Created one of the most prominent cultures for Irish culture. • Leader in what would become the IRA
