Different types of mouth infections

In our mouth are already living hundreds of different bacteria species in a balanced ecosystem. Infections come up when that balance changes and bad bacteria take over others.
Some oral infections such as canker sores and herpes are easy to get rid of and they will stick in your mouth for a few days only. There are other oral diseases, however, such as gingivitis, periodontitis, dental caries and abscesses (periodontal and periapical) that are dangerous because they may lead to more serious pathologies.

The most common oral problem is represented by dental caries or tooth decays. Caries appear when the oral hygiene practice is very poor and dental plaque can easily accumulate on top or around one or more than one of your teeth. Bacteria within plaque can destroy the enamel and get access to the inner part of the dental element called pulp. When the infection reach the pulp you will experience a very bad toothache. The conventional tooth decay treatment is performed by the dentist who will remove the infection from the crown and close the hole with a colored dental filling so nobody will recognize you got a cavity.

If leaved untreated, the infection inside the tooth will grow, reach the tip of the dental root and try to exit the tooth itself spreading the bacteria around. When it happens a tooth abscess forms and you will feel symptoms like swelling, redness and pain in the cheek. It is also very common to see a gum boil with pus close to the abscess area.

The standard abscess treatment involves the root canal procedure meaning that the endodontist has to clean the tooth root with special manual tools and sanitize it with sodium hypochlorite. Often the natural dental crown is so damaged that a prosthetic one will replace it and protect the rest of your tooth.

A different case is when the plaque can form deep gum pockets in between tooth and gingiva. If that happens gingivitis becomes periodontitis and the tooth is at risk to falling because its support like periodontal ligament and surrounded gums are attacked by the infection. bacteria within the pockets tend to kill the close tissue that, once necrotic, will smell very bad. If a gum boil forms, it is not a good idea to pop it by yourself; instead, set an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible. In order to take the pain under control, over the counter drugs are more than enough or, in alternative, there are some home remedies that can help you a lot.

As you can see, mouth infections are serious staff you should not underestimate. In any case, it possible to avoid all this pain and troubles paying more attention to the daily oral cleaning procedures. Dentists always suggest to brush your teeth after each meal, at least three times a day and flossing once a day. The brushing procedure should take two minutes per dental arch. If you see blood while brushing, it means that your gums already have some problems such as gingivitis. A good quality antibacterial mouthwash is what you need to kill the mild infection that is affecting your gingiva.
