  1. Spire Greetings Friends, Here we are launching into the last

month of summer and what a time we have had. Pastor John returns from his Sabbatical at the end of this month—how time flies! I hope you have been enjoying our God’s Wild Plan sermon series and the many guest speakers we have had during July. Isn’t it great to hear different perspectives? If you would like to catch up on the series, you can find the sermons on our website. Coming up in August there are more fun events for you and your friends, family, and neighbors to participate in. This month our Children and Junior High kids head to Forest Home Camp. You are invited to watch the movie Quartet with our Senior Adult Ministry on August 6. Also, please plan to attend the Bryan Verhoye and Friends concert on August 11 on the Plaza. Then take a bit of a break to prepare to launch into regular weekly programs the second week of September. If you are not already involved in a small group at the church, won’t you consider joining or starting one? Small groups are a great way to journey deeper into faith and make our large fellowship smaller. Our Adult Discipleship Committee is putting together a list of current small groups as a resource for you. If you are interested in checking one out, please let me know and I would be happy to give you some direction. Many blessings to you and yours as we wrap up this season. May God richly bless you as you seek Him. OUR CHURCH FAMILY IS AWESOME! “My child had a great time at VBS!” “My kids were so excited they all talked at once about their day.” “They couldn’t wait to come back!” These are the kinds of things we heard each day during the week of VBS. Our focus was on being good neighbors to people around the world. We had 117 children and over 60 volunteers in our program. During the week we saw the Bible stories come alive as we learned about how people in the Bible acted as good neighbors. During our Mission time the children had an opportunity to be good neighbors by putting together backpacks full of school supplies for PUM. We also had interesting sci- ence experiments, fun playing outside (especially when water was involved), yummy snacks, engaging music and crafts. People are already talking about coming back next year. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2013 A s you consider what your ministry will be this fall, please prayerfully consider volunteering with Children’s Discipleship. We are currently regis- tering volunteers for Sunday School and Kids Club (formerly Hang Time). Please contact Cindy Davis if you are interested at [email protected], or (619) 223-1633 x215. Rev. Karla Shaw and Youth Director Deleir Georges conduct the Baptism of Detrik Gerald Heidt at Kellogg Beach, San Diego Bay, on June 30, 2013.
  5. 5 Senior Adult Ministry AUGUST ACTIVITIES Movie Day, Quartet Tuesday,

August 6 11 am to 1 pm Family Life Center Popular opera diva Jean Horton (Maggie Smith) creates a stir with her arrival at Beecham House, a home for retired performers. No one feels the uproar more than Reginald (Tom Courtenay), Jean's ex-husband, who still stings from her long-ago infidelity. Most of the other Beecham residents are delighted, and try to convince Jean to join them in a performance of "Rigoletto." Jean, however, knows that she is long past her prime and is reluctant to sully the memory of her once-lovely voice. There is no charge if you bring a sack lunch. We will provide candy, popcorn and beverages. If you would like to purchase a boxed lunch with pizza, Caesar salad, fruit and cookie for $5.00, payment is due by Friday, August 2. Please RSVP to Leslie Hanna, even if you do not wish to purchase a lunch. Tuesday, August 13 Bingo & Scrabble 11:30 am to Noon: Lunch Noon to 1 pm: Games Family Life Center Join in the fun! We will have games galore. There is no charge if you bring a sack lunch. We will provide dessert and beverages. All summer questions and reservations may be addressed to Leslie Hanna, Director of Senior Adult Ministry. [email protected], or 619-223-1633 x210. Razzle Dazzle entertained in June. Prayer Quilt Sunday August 18 Celebration of our 11th Year Prayer Quilt Ministry Marks 11 Years Sunday, August 18, 2013 Over 1350 Quilts Tied Imagine that you are in the theater watching a play written, directed and produced by God. This is a story that takes place everyday around you, and yet this one grabs your attention. It begins with the making of a quilt. As the quilter pieces the fabrics, puts ties in, and asks God to bless the person who might receive this quilt, you realize this is about the power of prayer. As the story unfolds, a loved one, friend, or acquaintance offers a prayer quilt to a person in need. As hoped, the person accepts the offer, and asks for their special prayers. Friends, loved ones and strangers gather around the quilt in church, tie the knots and pray. The prayers become a source of strength, comfort and God’s love for the recipient. God’s loving kindness transforms all of our lives through the awesome power of prayer. Thank you so much for your prayers and the countless ways you have supported this ministry! If you would like to be a part of the Prayer Quilt Ministry, we are in need of more attendants to help with the quilts after each service. To help, or to request a prayer quilt, contact Susan Mueller, [email protected], or (619) 224-7070. If you are interested in growing your faith, contact Pastor Karla to learn about an appropriate small group for you.
