6. This Institution is named after its first chancellor of the university, NTR Rao. The university was constructed as the University of Health Sciences by the Andhra Pradesh government. And also inaugurated by him on 9th April 1986. However, it started functioning on 1st November 1986. Earlier, the university was known as the Andhra Pradesh University of Health Sciences. After the death of NTR Rao, the committee decided to change the name of the Institution and to rename it after the name of its founder, NT Rama Rao on 2nd February 1998.
