Building for the world from Nigeria with Open Source

Building for the world from Nigeria with Open Source

Using a listing of open source projects built by Nigerians for the world, we take a dive into the current state of open source in Nigeria. This talk is going to go over some data insights that we can get from this list and what we can do to improve them: demographics of contributors, languages, types of projects and also the people actively building stuff. It’d also shed some light on areas that we need to take note of including inclusion in open source.

  8. Only 3 out of 95
    contributors are women.

  9. Only 4 out of 102
    creators are women.
This indicates a serious need for more women
to be supported and encouraged to be a part
of open source. And also to not hesitate to
come out and be proud of their work.

  14. KEY TAKEAWAYS?
We need to provide a platform
    where more women
    comfortable participating,
    contributing, creating and
    sharing their open source
    projects.
Talent is everywhere and you can
build for the world regardless of
where you are. We also need more
    organizations to recognize this.
    JavaScript is right on top.
Powering a lot of these open
    source projects. And getting into
    contributing with these popular
    tools is easier than ever.
