  1. How APIs support the democratization of FAIR data and drive

business composability Darren Goodson IT Director, Integration and API Management September 2023
  2. Inspired by our purpose and values, we’re transforming the future

of healthcare by unlocking the power of what science can do – for people, society and the planet. Our purpose We push the boundaries of science to deliver life-changing medicines Our values We follow the science We put patients first We play to win We do the right thing We are entrepreneurial 2 March 2023
  3. Our ambition for 2030 “At AstraZeneca, our team is relentless

in its focus on pushing the boundaries of science to deliver life- changing medicines. By living our values and realising our strategic goals, we aim to transform patient outcomes, deliver industry-leading revenue growth, and ensure our company remains a great place to work. By 2030, we expect to launch at least 15 new medicines and be carbon negative, as we make an even bigger difference for people, society and the planet.” Pascal Soriot, CEO 3 March 2023
  4. Our strategic priorities Growth and Therapy Area Leadership March 2023

4 Science and Innovation People and Sustainability
  5. Data, digital and AI We’re using data, digital technologies and

AI to transform our company, accelerate our science and maximise our impact. 5 March 2023 Patients Advancing our disease understanding to deliver better medicines and treatments, more quickly, to more patients. Our organisation Transforming the way we work to accelerate our science, grow our business and empower people, sustainably. 8. 10 June 2023 Systems & Applications driving business composability "API-first”

does not mean "API-Only", but means using APIs as the preferred method of accessing applications, platforms and data. In the digital era, APIs are equally, if not more important as a well designed GUI.
  9. Your primary business systems API / Digital Marketplace Primary Experiences

Business Strategy Purchase to Pay Services Decomposing the enterprise – business services / platform example 11 Growth & TA Leadership Science & Innovation People & Sustainability Vendor Management Services Sales Order to Cash Services ERP
  10. 12 September 2023 Data is at the heart of our

Strategy Simplify Data Use Across the Enterprise Industrialize data foundations We will scale at pace the foundations to enable a digital enterprise and take a systematic approach to FAIR data Accelerate Insights Driven Decision Making Power smart capabilities at scale We will democratize AI and create self-service capability that puts the power of AI and analytics into the hands of employees We need FAIR and TRUST data: • Findable – I know where all our data is • Accessible – I can access the data I need • Interoperable – I can use one language for all my requests • Reusable – I can use existing data to answer new questions • Trustworthy, Reliable, Unified, Secure, Transparent We need to: • Have a Data & AI Strategy aligned to business outcome • Enable with the right Governance • Have a modern Platform to process and manage data • Have the right Skills and Operating Model
  11. 13 June 2023 Data driving business composability Managed APIs drive

the FAIR data principles, providing the capabilities for access to and exchange of data both internally and externally. API Management supports the data offices’ assurance and governance processes. Managed APIs and service interfaces support Business Data Offices manage and govern their data.

  13. 15 September 2023 Changing our culture, policies, processes and capabilities

Ensure regulatory compliance through good data governance Deep Medicine – molecular, patient, wearables, population disease insight Two sides to data: Opportunity (Value) and Risk. Outcome driven and Governance data strategies help balance these. VALUE Optimize value creation for the business RISK Minimizing risk for the enterprise Autonomous Smart Factories self- optimising, self-adapting, integrated into the supply chain Artificial Intelligence transforming processes and insight across AZ Avoiding data breaches by having good data security practices Data privacy and consent for re- use is never compromised

  17. 19 March 2023 Summary • “Imagine a world where we

are not confined to screens and keyboards” • In the digital era, APIs are more important than a well defined GUI, so think about adopting an API-first approach • APIs are an enabler in governing the associated risks around data • Modern solutions are composed and not built - APIs provide a self-service access point to your most valuable Services, Capabilities and Data, speeding up the time to value • Do not approach your APIs from solely an integration perspective. Think of APIs as a foundational part of your product offering, whether that be a platform or data product. • Ensure you have capabilities to drive consistency and quality, do your APIs represent your company brand?
