Bear Goes Vegetarian

Course work for MFA. Simple character arc extrapolated from a fable.

1. scene 001 seq 001 Bear enters f rame right, casually walking through the forest.
2. scene 001 seq 002 Along the way, he happens upon a rose hip bush
3. scene 001 seq 003 Along the way, he happens upon a rose hip bush—with berries.
4. scene 001 seq 004 Bear stops to take a look at the bush.
5. scene 002 seq 001 Plenty of berries...and Bear IS kind of hungry.
6. scene 003 seq 001 Even though he’s hungry, Bear is less-than-interested in the berries
7. scene 003 seq 002 On the other hand, he did make a promise to himself
8. scene 003 seq 003 Oh COME ON! Does anybody even like these things?
9. scene 003 seq 004 But Bear has only been a vegetarian for 27 minutes. He can’t give up now.
10. scene 004 seq 001 There they are. They’re just sitting there. Waiting.
11. scene 004 seq 002 Oh Just do it. Jump in. —Bear reaches in to pick some berries f rom the bush.
12. scene 004 seq 003 He gingerly picks a spring with a few juicy berries.
13. scene 005 seq 001 ...and examines the harvest in his hand.
14. scene 005 seq 002 He raises the berries to get a better look.
15. scene 005 seq 003 Bear decides its now or never.
16. scene 005 seq 004 He raises the berries to his mouth.
17. scene 006 seq 001 And with the slightest of nibbles...
18. scene 006 He takes one. seq 002
19. scene 007 seq 001 He chews a bit— It’ll probably get better in a bit.
20. scene 007 seq 002 Any minute now.— He keeps chewing...
21. scene 007 maybe... seq 003
22. scene 007 seq 004 Uh NOPE, this isn’t going to work.— The berry has got to go.

24. scene 008 seq 001 In disgust, Bear winds up...
25. scene 008 seq 002 Slams his sprig of berries to the ground.
26. scene 008 seq 003 Then boots it as far away f rom himself as possible.
27. scene 008 seq 004 He watches with revulsion as the sprig tumbles back to the ground.
28. scene 008 seq 005 As his temper cools, Bear realizes that he’s being stupid about this whole thing. He’s a bear after all. How could a tiny berry get the better of him?
29. scene 009 seq 001 Cut to wide shot, and we see just how far Bear kicked the berries. Demoralized and ashamed, Bear has to make the long trudge to pick up the berries.

34. scene 009 seq 006 Vegetarianism is not going well...but Bear made a promise, after all.
35. scene 009 seq 007 So with a deep sigh, Bear gathers his resolve...
36. scene 009 seq 008 ...and begins to stoop to pick up his sprig of berries.
37. scene 010 seq 001 Cut to over Bear’s shoulder, looking down at the berries.
38. scene 010 seq 002 We get a sense of just how big Bear is, and just how small those berries (the berries that almost did him in) are.
39. scene 011 seq 001 Cut to look back through the forest. We can see the path bear walked to get here.
40. scene 011 seq 002 Bear enters the shot f rom below as he rises f rom retrieving the berries.
41. scene 011 seq 003 Bear takes one last look at these silly little berries before he eats them.
42. scene 011 seq 004 ...but something in the distance perks up Bear’s ears. It almost sounds like...a rabbit in trouble!
43. scene 011 seq 005 In an instant the berries vanish f rom Bear’s mind as his predatory drives come flooding back. All he can think of now is food. REAL food.
