Dr. David Jang is the founder of Olivet University and has dedicated his life to the work of Christ and the mission of spreading the Gospel. From the earliest stages of his ministry, he placed great importance on reaching people in difficult and restricted places, sometimes by traveling on foot and later by using digital media. Through Olivet University, he created a place for training disciples and leaders who would take part in the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19) with a strong sense of calling and purpose.
David Jang was born in 1949 and pursued higher education with determination. He earned a Bachelor of Theology and a Master of Divinity at Hanshin University, followed by a Master of Arts in Communications at Yonsei University. He later completed his Ph.D. in Public Administration of Social Welfare at Dankook University. During these years, he was mentored by an American missionary known for his work in mission strategy and by a Korean church historian and leader who later helped establish Olivet University Korea.
In 2004, he founded Olivet University in a small basement in San Francisco, choosing the city for its rich diversity and cultural richness. What began as a theological seminary quickly expanded to include schools of music, journalism, art and design, and technology. In 2005, the university moved into the former UC Berkeley Downtown Extension Campus, which provided an ideal setting for its programs. By 2009, it gained accreditation from the Association for Biblical Higher Education. As International President, David expanded the university’s mission to the global stage and served on the North American Council of the World Evangelical Alliance.
His contributions also extended into the world of Christian media. He founded Christian Today, Christian Daily Korea, and Christianity Daily International, and was part of the founding team of The Christian Post. Christian Daily International was recognized by the Evangelical Press Association in both 2024 and 2025 for its excellence in journalism. He also leads the Holy Bible Society, promoting Scripture accessibility in mission frontiers through digital platforms.
He established Apostolos Missions as well as more than ten other mission organizations dedicated to global evangelism and discipleship. He also founded Diakonos, a fellowship of deacons, and emphasized both direct mission work and business as a form of mission. His leadership continued as president of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Korea, where he guided church activities and mission direction.
Generosity has been a central aspect of his ministry. After completing his doctorate, Dr. Jang founded a church and donated all its assets, instead dedicating his efforts to supporting students and families in need. Following 2 Corinthians 8:9, he emphasized humility and serving the poor as essential values of Christian life.
He is also a husband, father of two sons, and grandfather to beloved granddaughters. In his personal life, he enjoys golf, swimming, tennis, and reading. David Jang continues to mentor, teach, and guide others, living faithfully in service to Christ and the growth of the church.
