Dr. Vincenzo Giordano is a Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at NHS Lothian Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh, Scotland, specializing in aortic surgery. Since 2018, he has been the Cardiothoracic Lead for the National Service of Complex Aortic Surgery in Scotland, providing expert care in the medical and surgical management of aortic conditions.
Dr. Giordano’s career began in 2011 after he moved to the UK, joining the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. There, he gained valuable experience in complex adult cardiothoracic surgeries and developed a particular expertise in managing critically ill patients. He also completed the Fundamental Critical Care Support (FCCS) certification. In 2012, he joined the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh as a Specialty Doctor, where he was involved in elective and emergency surgeries and furthering his research in cardiac and aortic surgery. His role also included attending multidisciplinary meetings where mortality and morbidity were discussed.
In 2015, Dr. Vincenzo was appointed as a Locum Consultant in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Royal Infirmary, where he began performing surgeries independently. By 2017, he had secured a permanent Consultant position. Over the years, he has performed more than 1900 cardiac and aortic surgeries, averaging more than 200 cases annually. His surgical work includes complex procedures such as total arterial myocardial revascularisation, ECMO implantation, and aortic valve repair, among others. He is also an integral part of the Scottish National Thoraco-Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm and Complex Aortic Service, which provides specialized care for patients with aortic conditions.
In 2020, Dr. Giordano introduced a port-access approach for aortic valve replacement through a mini right anterior thoracotomy, making his institution the only center in Scotland to use this technique. He has also been actively involved in the national TAVI program since 2012, where he helps develop surgical access for the procedure and leads the Quality Improvement Programme within his department, which includes auditing and creating new protocols.
Dr. Vincenzo introduced the Frozen Elephant Trunk (FET) procedure to Scotland and has performed over 70 surgeries. He is passionate about educating future surgeons and regularly participates in workshops and conferences. He is a member of several professional societies, including the European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery and the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain & Ireland.
Dr. Giordano earned his medical degree from the University School of Medicine in Brescia, Italy, in 2005 and completed his residency in Cardiac Surgery at the University of Milano Bicocca. He also completed fellowships at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Medisch Spectrum Twente in the Netherlands, where he refined his skills in minimally invasive surgery.
Born in 1980 in Bergamo, Italy, he was inspired by his father, a cardiac surgeon, to pursue a career in medicine. His strong work ethic and dedication to surgery continue to guide his career. Dr. Vincenzo Giordano remains a prominent figure in cardiothoracic surgery, particularly in aortic surgery, and continues to make valuable contributions to the field.
