  1. inn 宀 house +亻 person + 百 hundred Most houses

only have a few residents, but an inn is a house where a hundred people can stay.
  2. exchange 亻 person + 弋 dart This kanji is also

used for “fee”—the money you pay for food or housing or transportation. This person is a terrible customer; instead of paying money for his meal, he shoots a dart at you in exchange.
  3. lend 代 exchange + 貝 shell “Can you lend me

some money?” “Okay, but in exchange, you’ll have to give me some shells.”
  4. change 亻 person + 匕 spoon You reach into your

wallet for some spare change, but it has all changed into spoons. Or see this character as a picture of a person changing position and sitting down.
  5. flower 艹 grass + 化 change This plant looks like

normal grass, but it will change into flowers!
  6. what 亻 person + 可 can What can that person

do? Nothing I can’t do better. Personman, personman, does whatever a person can.
  7. go 亻 people + 一 one + 丁 street Picture

two people (perhaps you and a best friend or favorite celebrity?) going down one street together. They are walking close together, so from the side, you can only see the legs of one person. As a left-hand element, we simplify going and use only the first three strokes: 彳 For this simpler element, we will also use the image of people standing in line.
  8. wait 彳 line + 寺 temple I wanted to go

to the temple too, but there was a long line outside, so I had to wait.
  9. skin 厂 cliff + 丨 stick + 又 as well

Remember the 店 store in the cliff? As well as magic wands, they also sell animal skins, which hang from the ceiling of the cave, hooked on sticks. Remember the hook on the second stroke!
  10. he 彳 go + 皮 skin The caveman is the

ultimate he-man; everywhere he goes, he wears nothing but animal skins. My boyfriend loves leather clothing; he will stand in line for hours just to buy a coat made of animal skin.
