  1. flag * Picture a flag flying on a flagpole—it’s so

windy that the pole is bending slightly. Occasionally we will also see a related element, which we will call striped flag.
  2. roof 尸 flag + 一 ceiling + ム elbow +

土 soil Remember the 室 room with the dirt floor and the ceiling you have to hold up with your elbows? I upgraded the roof, and added a flag on top to celebrate.
  3. late 尸 flag + 羊 sheep + 辶 road “Why

are you late?” “The road was full of sheep.” “How did you get them to move?” “I waved a flag at them.”
  4. ruler This kanji was used for an old Japanese unit

of length called the shaku, about twelve inches. Remember it as R for ruler— another way to measure twelve inches.
  5. daytime 尺 ruler + 日 day + 一 floor I

can see the sun above the floor—it must be daytime. What time is it? I don’t know; I don’t have a clock, just this ruler.
  6. door 一 ceiling + 尸 flag I can’t afford a

door, so I have to hang a single flag from the ceiling instead.
  7. show 二 two + 小 little This character is also

a common element in other kanji, where it means altar. I built two little altars, but was afraid to show them to God because they were too small. As a left-hand element, the altar element is simplified, with the second and third strokes connected: Do not confuse with 衤 cloak!
  8. say humbly 日 day +丨stick In Japanese and in English,

people tend to use more and longer words when they are being polite. Imagine listening to a formal speech—the speaker is trying to speak humbly, but you’ve been here all day. You fantasize about sticking a stick in his mouth to shut him up.
  9. god 礻 altar + 申 say humbly How to communicate

with God: kneel in front of the altar and speak humbly to show your respect!
  10. fruit 田 rice field + 木 tree Fruit is very

nutritious. Instead of planting a whole rice field, eat the fruit from just one tree. Note that both elements share their vertical stroke; write day with one below it, then the long vertical.
