  1. sheep A truly bare-bones sheep: horns on the head, four

legs, and a tail. But where is the wool? When sheep appears above another element, it loses its tail: A second variant of this element pulls the sheep’s tail to the side. We will call this version wool; imagine holding a sheep by its tail in order to shear it.
  2. ocean 氵 water drops + 羊 sheep This kanji refers

to the waters of the Pa-sheep-ic Ocean. Uh, sorry, I mean the Pacific.
  3. appearance 木 tree + 羊 sheep + 氺 dripping This

kanji is also used to write sama, a respectful name suffix for someone of high rank. I had heard that Hitsuji-sama was a great man, but when I finally met him, his appearance was so strange I couldn’t believe it: he had climbed a tree and was holding a wet sheep, dripping water from its tail.
  4. put on clothes wool + 目 eye Put on a

pullover sweater by pulling the wool over your eyes.
  5. turkey * We will call this bird pictogram a turkey.

First draw the head, then the neck, and the beak with its red waddle. The last four lines become the body and fancy tail. If you have ever traced your hand to draw a turkey, you may see this element as that hand turned sideways: thumb on top (the head) and four fingers (making the tail).
  6. gather 隹 turkey + 木 tree The hunters could not

find any turkeys… they had all gathered at the top of a tree! Gather turkeys for Thanksgiving. Gather trees for Christmas.
  7. noon lying down + 十 ten Noon is a good

time to lie down for a ten minute nap.
  8. feathers A picture of two bird wings. Strangely, each wing

has only two feathers. As an element, feathers sometimes takes an alternate form with straight lines like katakana yo, as we will see in 曜 weekday.
  9. learn 羽 feathers + 白 white The young bird is

so inexperienced that its feathers are pure white. It still has a lot to learn.
  10. weekday 日 sun + 羽 feathers + 隹 turkey Every

weekday, I dread the sun rising—I wish I could stay in bed. I hide my head under my soft turkey feather pillows.
