  1. exit 山 mountain + 山 mountain I’m sick of hiking—it

feels like there are mountains on top of mountains. Where’s the exit? (It’s between those two mountains.)
  2. both 一 ceiling + 冂 belt + 山 mountain There

are two ways to get past a mountain: go over it (the ceiling) or around it (the belt). Both ways work, but the first is more difficult.
  3. enter Enter the tent. Don’t confuse enter with umbrella! When

enter appears above another element, leave a gap (an entrance, if you will) between the tops of the strokes, similar to 八 eight. We see this in the next kanji, 分 part.
  4. part 八 enter + 刀 dagger My part in the

play is very simple: I enter the scene carrying a dagger and then cut the villain up into eight parts.
  5. outhouse * 小 small + 宀 house + 口 mouth

This element combines the three strokes of small with the roof of the house element, above an opening—let’s call it a window. An outhouse is a small house, of course, and this one has a window set into the door.
  6. hall outhouse + 土 soil This kanji is used for

big public buildings like assembly halls or cafeterias. Imagine that the food in the dining hall is so bad that you throw it to the ground and run to the outhouse.
  7. bone * 一 one + 夕 evening An image of

meat hanging from a bone. I only get one evening off a week, so I like to treat myself with a bone-in steak.
  8. remainder 歹 bone + 三 three + 戈 spears Picture

a hungry cave man—the remainder of his food is nothing but bones. He hopes he can kill another animal with his remaining three spears. Pay attention to the stroke order of the right element, which combines 三 three and 戈 spear.
  9. death 歹 bone + 匕 spoon The hungry caveman’s hunt

was unsuccessful—now all he has left is a bone and a spoon. He fears that his death may be imminent.
