  1. hand If this is a picture of a hand, it

must belong to an alien—it has either three fingers, or six!
  2. finger * When 手 hand appears as a left-hand element,

we simplify it by removing a stroke. Instead of a hand, think of just one finger, with the two intersecting lines showing the two finger joints.
  3. hold 扌 finger + 寺 temple Have you heard of

the titan Atlas, the Greek giant who held the world on his shoulders? Surely it would be easy for him to hold up a temple with just one finger. If you become a monk, the only possessions you are allowed to have are the things you can hold in your fingers when you arrive at the temple.
  4. two hands * Picture this element as representing two hands

stretched in the same direction, perhaps holding the same thing—a task that takes two hands.
  5. polish 石 stone + 开 two hands To polish a

stone, you need two hands: one to hold it, and the other to rub it.
  6. arm * An arm hanging next to the body, perhaps

with an object tucked under the arm.
  7. length 一 one + 乂 arm How do you measure

length without a ruler? Just use one arm. “It’s about one arm’s length.”
  8. history 口 mouth + 乂 tucked under the arm I

don’t know much about history; I spent most of history class asleep, with my head on my desk and my mouth tucked under my folded arms.
  9. as well This rare kanji means “as well”, and is

similar to & or + in English. As an element, we will give it a more concrete meaning: crotch. It looks like the lower body of a person with legs crossed.
  10. angry 女 woman + 又 crotch + 心 heart The

angry woman kicked him in the crotch because he had broken her heart.
  11. friend by one’s side + 又 as well A friend

is someone who stays by one’s side through bad times as well as good times.
  12. anti- 厂 cliff + 又 crotch The anti-hero’s trademark is

not an honorable fight; instead, he kicks his enemy in the crotch and pushes them off a cliff.
