3. For who? For who? The visually-impaired The visually-impaired browse a computer using a screen reader installed on the machine. The screen reader vocally transcribes the text displayed on the screen. A Braille display is often used as a complement to the screen reader to facilitate understanding of tables or complex diagrams.
4. For who? The difficulty Screen readers interpret the PDF format as an image format, meaning that it is not possible to vocally transcribe the document. Therefore, PDF document accessibility via voice synthesis requires prior processing. accessibility layer
5. Standards The W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) is an organisation in charge of defining standards for Web technologies. It is at the origin of digital accessibility and the creation of recommendations: WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines). Today, these have become the worldwide standard for designing accessible websites and supports. The ISO 14289-1 standard has recognised PDF/UA file accessibility since 2012. This recognition is a major step in the gradual generalisation of accessibility criteria for PDF files which guarantees universal access to content.

Standards These standards imply: • Structuring of information, replicating the intuitive reading order of a valid person in order to help a blind person to understand the document • Enabling a blind person to have access to the document’s different graphic elements and to have an adapted vocal transcription of them • Favouring compatibility with the different technical assistance systems used by the visually-impaired
