  1. Cognitive Science “the study of thought, learning, and mental organization

which draws on aspects of psychology, linguistics, philosophy, and computer modeling.” - Merriam Webster
  2. Levels of Analysis Psychologist David Marr describes three levels of

analysis: computational theory: specifying goals of computation representation + algorithms: representing the inputs and outputs and the algorithms that transform one to the other hardware implementation: how the algorithm and representation may be physically realized
  3. Research Methods Behavioral Experiments Measuring responses to certain stimuli, paying

particular attention to: reaction time psychophysical responses eye tracking
  4. Research Methods Brain Imaging Analyzing activity in the brain while

performing certain tasks, using various imaging techniques. Heavily involves neuroscience.
  5. Research Methods Computational Modeling mathematically + logically representing the question

Symbolic Modeling: Understanding abstract mental functions, operating using symbols Sub-symbolic Modeling: Following the neural and associative properties of the human brain
  6. Limitations The limitations within this field are an inverse ratio

of technological capabilities and the complexity of cognition– the latter isn’t going to change.
  7. Ethical Concerns Cognitive Enhancement Once it becomes possible to synthetically

augment cognitive ability, we’ve essentially created super- humans. A whole new set of issues regarding racism, classism, and power structures become present.
  8. Ethical Concerns Artificial Intelligence There are three levels of artificial

intelligence: narrow, general, and super. Artificial super-intelligence brings exciting prospects, but the uncertainty and unpredictability is an existential threat.
  9. What is sound knowledge? In Cognitive Science: In cognitive science,

as in other similar scientific fields, sound knowledge is generally knowledge that is peer-reviewed and determined by the academic community at large (majority rather than consensus) to be accurate.
