DOOR TO WELLNESS EVENTS A 2010 discussion held at the American College of Sports Medicine Roundtable challenged the previous philosophy that cancer patients should rest and avoid activity. Growing evidence supports that cancer patients can benefi t from physical activity before, during and after cancer treatment and therefore, should avoid inactivity. Th e study said that keeping active throughout the cancer journey can preserve or improve physical function and psychological well-being, reducing the negative impact of some cancer-related side-eff ects. Regular physical activity also has a potential role in reducing risk of cancer recurrence and increasing survival, according to the paper “Th e Importance of Physical Activity for People Living with and Beyond Cancer” published by Macmillan Cancer Sup- port. Yoga is a form of physical activity that can be practiced by adults of all fi tness levels and can be modifi ed based on individ- ual abilities. A study published in the Clinical Journal of On- cology Nursing shows that yoga integrates awareness of breath, relaxation, exercise, and social support – elements that are key to enhancing quality of life in patients with cancer. Studies show yoga’s cancer impact Yoga instructor Stella Snyder demonstrates exercises that can help cancer patients regain their mobility and improve their quality of life. 2. AFFORDABLE CARE ACT The healthcare landscape is chang- ing across

the country and right here in central Indiana as the Affordable Care Act (ACA) rolls out. Despite a few system glitches during the first open enrollment period from October 2013-March 2014, enrollment goals exceeded expectations. Over 8 million people enrolled in insur- ance plans through the Marketplace across the country, and more than 132,000 were Hoosiers. With new insurance regulations, those individuals now have access to free preventative care that includes several cancer screenings and none were denied health insurance due to a preexisting con- dition, such as cancer. Little Red Door has taken an active role in educating our clients about what the ACA means for them and how they can access affordable health insurance. Six Little Red Door staff members have been certified as Indiana Navigators and have helped our clients through the enrollment process, getting them on the path to better access to healthcare. We are already seeing a decline in the demand for mammogra- phy screenings as more clients now have full health care coverage that includes free preventative care. While Indiana did not choose to expand Medicaid in year one, we are hopeful that Governor Pence’s HIP 2.0 proposal will prove to be the solution for the 350,000-plus low income Hoosiers still left without an affordable coverage option. With more than 75% of our clients meeting the HIP 2.0 eligibility requirements, that could mean compre- hensive, affordable health coverage for so many and the opportunity for Little Red Door to address other critical needs for cancer patients and survivors in central Indiana. 2 NEWSLETTER Fall 2014 What healthcare changes mean for LRD clients Vice President of Program Develop- ment Tanya Shelburne shows Client Navigator Konah Williams how the new Health Care Marketplace website works.

Last year’s Face of Hope Breakfast raised more than $340,000, a new record for the agency, and had more than 850 attendees. This year’s event will remain at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, but will move to the Expo Hall in order to accommodate what we think will be the largest breakfast ever. The format will stay the same – client speakers and moving videos will demon- strate the impact that Little Red Door has had on its clients and on the community. If you’re interested in being a table cap- tain, please contact Nick Duvall, Director of Resource Development, at nduvall@ littlereddoor.org or (317) 920-4685. 4. 4 Yoga proves helpful for LRD clients, cancer patients In

April Little Red Door began the Door to Wellness program, which offers massage and yoga to cancer patients, sur- vivors and their caregivers. The program has been a boon to those currently fight- ing the disease, including LRD client and breast cancer patient Terry Rogers. “Because all the muscles were cut in my right side, I’ve had very limited range of movement,” Rogers said. “Since I’ve been coming to yoga it’s increased dramatically, and I’ve only been coming for 3 weeks.” Yoga for cancer and chronic illness certified instructor Stella Snyder said that the yoga she teaches at LRD “consists of specific movements that can help prevent neuropathy, ease and prevent lymphedema, and help with our focus, which can ease the ‘chemo brain’ that some patients may experience.” The yoga classes are also one way that Little Red Door is helping cancer patients and survivors increase their self-sufficien- cy. By giving them the tools to increase their mobility, they are more able to face their cancer treatments independently. Snyder teaches them techniques that they can use wherever they are. “Everything that we do in class students can take home and practice,” Snyder said. “A lot of the movements and breathing practices can be done while watching TV, while waiting for doctor appointments, or anytime the student has downtime.” Studies show that people who exercise show decreased risk of cancer while cancer patients who exercise have increased sur- vivorship rates.
