Soft Skills are the Hard Skills: Lessons Learned as a Junior Dev

This talk covers several soft skills I have found important in my growth as a junior developer, and also covers ways to grow these soft skills.

Presented at That Conference 2017.

Abstract:
Developing software as a junior developer is challenging. You’re learning new languages, frameworks, testing strategies, workflows, and the list goes on. Learning these hard skills are an integral part of being a software developer. However, there’s also other things you’re learning at the same time - how to work on a team, how to communicate your ideas and questions clearly, and probably how to overcome impostor syndrome. How do you know you’re using and growing these soft skills effectively? It’s definitely not as easy to tell that you are communicating effectively as it is to tell when you are using a for loop effectively!

In this talk, we’ll cover several soft skills and how they relate to working in software development. We’ll talk about skills ranging from the interpersonal to the intrapersonal. As an attendee, you’ll come away with strategies for identifying growth opportunities in your soft skills, and growing your soft skills to use them more effectively. We may be looking at these skills through my eyes as a junior developer, but there will be something in this talk for everyone, regardless of experience level or role.
