501c3 organization based in Louisville, Kentucky. Its mission is to bring together partners that link global strategies with local cultures to advance women’s health in developing countries with a focus on cancer. WGCA was founded by Robert D. Hilgers, MD. Affectionately known as Dr. Bob, he has given his life to working with women as an Ob/Gyn specializing in oncology. He knows the advantages of the “See & Treat” method of diagnosing cervical cancer, and he is leading the charge to bring it to Haiti. Dr. Robert Hilgers talks with a patient. Monday, September 16, 13
Treat” method was developed in the 1990‘s, and uses ordinary household vinegar to detect precancerous and cancerous lesions. It’s the equivalent of a pap smear, and the success of this technique has been well documented in Africa and India. WGCA wants to bring this method of cervical cancer screening and treatment to Haiti. Swab patient’s cervix with vinegar Precancerous lesions turn white and are readily visible Freeze lesions with carbon dioxide or liquid nitrogen Monday, September 16, 13
It’s cheap, quick, efficient, and accurate. No pap smears necessary. No expensive lab equipment needed. ✤ Biopsies are often unnecessary, except in cases of questionable results, and these cases can be read by local or in-country Pathologists. ✤ In-country community healthcare workers can be trained in about a week to provide information and education about “See and Treat” procedures. ✤ Easily accessible carbon dioxide or liquid nitrogen can be used to freeze precancerous lesions. Cryotherapy results in a minimally invasive and less painful removal of lesions, with the patient usually experiencing only minor cramping. ✤ Instant results and treatment, so women don’t have to make another trip to the clinic. ✤ With less disruptions to their families and work, women are more inclined to seek check-ups and receive necessary life-saving interventions. cancer in the world - 93/100,000 cases each year. ✤ Haiti is one of the poorest countries on the planet. Cancer facilities - to educate, screen, and treat cancer - do not exist in this country. Prevention, then, becomes key to halting cancer in third-world countries where unchecked cancer becomes a death sentence. ✤ We can put in place a cost-effective, sustainable model that will help end suffering, boost quality-of-life, and keep families in tact. ✤ We can create a positive impact on future generations of Haitians. By partnering with governments and private entities now, we can halt cervical cancer and prevent needless death, sickness, and disruption to families. ✤ Once Haitians become comfortable with the clinics, the facilities will expand their scope to become a community resource for general wellness education and treatment, including HIV testing, vaccines, food vouchers, etc. Monday, September 16, 13
have the infrastructure and the partnerships in place right now to start the process of eradicating cervical cancer in Haiti. ✤ The “See and Treat” method of prevention is much cheaper in the long term. ✤ The ROI (Return on Investment) is high. A relatively small amount of money can completely change the legacy for this marginalized, yet extremely important, population of women for the betterment of their families and communities. ✤ Each dollar can be tracked. This program is small enough to be easily controlled and monitored, but its reach is large enough to create a measurable economic and social impact. ✤ We live in a global economy, and stabilizing Haiti will impact the rest of the world. ✤ It’s the right thing to do. WGCA’s value statement is to treat those we serve as we would like to be treated. Monday, September 16, 13

the lives of hurting people.” Much like the polio vaccine eradicated that disease beginning in the 1950’s, the “See and Treat” vinegar method of identifying precancerous lesions will help eliminate cancer of the cervix for the women of Haiti. Our wish is to stop the scourge of cancer and what lies in its wake - economic and familial instability. This method has done that in Africa and India. It will do that in Haiti. We really do have the answer that will make a difference in the lives of hurting people...and will change the course for generations to come. Monday, September 16, 13

I can change this if this is not accurate... Monday, September 16, 13
