Summary • Passive RFID enables computers to see objects at distances from millimeters to tens of meters. • Battery-assisted passive systems have ranges of a 100+ meters. • Read rates range from 200 to 1200 tags per second (protocol limited) • Read accuracy is (100 - !)%, ! " 0 • Diverse reader form-factors and low-cost tags enable applications in real- time, ultra-local search • Reality search engines are a reality

Business motivation • Average utilization of mobile equipment is 45% • Some hospitals lose up $1 million in medical equipment theft • 5 - 15% of hospital inventory is written off each year because it can’t be located or serviced on schedule • Moving equipment from patient to patient without decontamination is a significant issue in infection control • Rental equipment is inefficiently managed.
Problems with existing approach • Existing solution uses 802.11 based active tags • Hospital 802.11 infrastructure is not set up to handle hundreds of simultaneous clients • Wi-Fi location resolution is ~30 ft. Room/bed level resolution is difficult to achieve. • Active tags have a finite battery life (0.5 - 3 years) • Approach: Augment active systems with passive UHF at choke points. This solves the in/out problem.
