  1. Overview “Uneasy is the head that wears a crown” “Of

Ordination and Rebellion” is a dystopian dark fantasy thriller which can be potentially turned into a 12 episode TV series. It is set in a world of a mix between Victorian fictional Steampunk culture and Japanese Tradition. Each year, the government will crown the city’s smartest scholar of eighteen years as the “Ordained Scholar”. A matsuri (festival) will be held only for this event as a farewell ceremony to the scholar, as they will never be able to return to the city as soon as they set foot on the journey to reach “the Path of Light”, a paradise ordained by the Lord. Scholars are destined to bring honour and glory to the Lord and his citizens by researching and exploring the unlimited potential of steam powered innovation and technology with the help of the lord himself. Young, optimistic and ladylike, Arietta makes sure she is the most well-prepared “Ordained Scholar” in the history of the city. However, As she is being led to the location where the coronation ceremony unfolds, she realises something is deeply wrong..
  2. Arietta Being the younger sister of the esteemed former “Ordained

scholar”, Arietta is raised in a well educated and wealthy environment. Although Arietta idolises her sister, she also resents her sister for being the reason why her efforts and academic achievements are undermined by the people around her. Sometimes a bit too stubborn and persistent, she would often over-work to leave a good impression. Her thirst for knowledge and humbleness makes her exceptionally religious and obedient to her “Lord”. All Arietta wanted was to reunite with her sister in the path of light, but little did she know the dark reason behind the existence of her coronation ceremony is to be offered as an oblation to a man-eating demon. Would she be able to outwit her enemies to get herself out of this impending doom of lies?
  3. The lord Most citizens are faithful followers of the Lord.

They thought the Lord exists spiritually in their hearts, and that he was kind to forgive them when they were once rebellious. In truth, the “Lord” is no God. It is a six armed humanoid with demon wings, living under the city, disguising as a deity loosely inspired by Buddhist and Hindu Gods. The entity was first tasked to look over this abandoned city a thousand years ago. After learning the possibilities of manipulating and farming human using illusions, it began thirsting for people’s attention and worship to gain its energy and power. It is believed that the monster will truly be invincible once its power reaches its peak. The demon’s favourite dinner is the city’s smartest human beings. The more complicated a human brain structure is, the tastier it is.
  4. Governor Canning Cunning, selfish and greedy, Canning heads a corrupted

government that honors a contract made between him and the demon, in which it states that he gains a special privilege of having one year longer to live each time he successfully completes a sacrificial ceremony… or so he thought. The demon lives in a lair under the governor’s castle. All the staff are required to serve the demon and keep the truth about “the Lord” a secret from anyone. If they fail to do so, their families and friends will be executed. To execute their plan, Canning claims that the castle has an underground transportation that takes the scholar to the “Path of Light”. In fact, the “Path of Light” doesn’t exist at all. All “Ordained Scholar” will eventually be eaten by the demon on their coronation day. After consumption, the demon will show an illusion of the scholar arriving at the “Path of Light” to the citizens at the end of the festival. It will also create an illusion for Canning to see himself as a year younger than before.
  5. The festival It has long been a tradition for citizens

to relax and enjoy different forms of entertainment, to celebrate and demonstrate their faith in God during this festival. Since normal citizens have less access to Steampunk Victorian culture side of things, festivals are held in a more Traditional Japanese way. Snacks and merchandise based on this year’s “Ordained Scholar” such as pancakes and figurines would also be sold in stalls. The governor would participate in festivals to appear more relatable. Accompanied by drum and flute music, little palanquins of the Lord would be moved out of local shrines and carried around the capitol.
  6. The changing Room Located in the Governor’s castle at the

end of the creepy, dark corridor, the changing room is usually the final destination of most “Ordained Scholar’s” lives before they are transported to the nightmarish sacrificial altar. Even if they try to escape, every path they head towards would be led back to the monster’s lair. Any kind of protest will be futile.
  7. Story breakdowns: 1. The city is packed with people celebrating

the coronation ceremony. They gather outside the governor’s castle. 2. A door with a mural showing a scholar being crowned and adored by the citizens is being pushed open. A scholar, Arietta, walks into the balcony with the governor to greet the crowd. The crowd cheers. 3. Arietta is then led to the changing room by maids and guards. One of the maid is holding a crown. They walk along a corridor. 4. A mysterious creature stalks them from afar. The whooshing sound of its flapping wings frightened Arietta and blew of the torches along the corridor. 5. A drop of saliva hits the floor. Arietta looks for its source, her gaze is met with two eyes glowing in the dark. 6. The creature disappears. 7. The maids urge her to continue walking. They enter the changing room where they prepare her for the sacrificial ceremony. 8. Arietta scans the room and is shocked to see a mural displaying a scholar being fed to a monster. 9. Terrified, she picks up a hairpin and stabs the maids. 10. She makes a run to the vent while guards at the door outside are attempting to get into the changing room. 11. As she is crawling through the vent, she sees light in the other end. 12. Suddenly, a guard grabs her leg and tries to pull her out of the vent. 13. She gets rid of them with a kick and pushes open the vent door. 14. She drops into a sacrificial altar. The monster, awaiting for her arrival patiently, parts the curtain of the altar, and slowly approaches her…
