  1. A foodbank is a place where food is collected and

    stored. The food is used for people who need food as they might be hungry.
  2. The food that is collected, is mostly in tins, jars

    or packets, so that it stays good to eat. Fresh food is not collected by a foodbank.
  3. This school have collected some food.The food will be donated

    to a local foodbank, like the Wirral Foodbank.
  4. When the food arrives at the foodbank, one of the

    volunteers weighs it on a special set of scales.
  5. The food is sorted at the warehouse and is then

    taken to one of the 14 distribution centres across the Wirral.
  6. People can be hungry because they don’t have enough money

    to buy food for themselves or their family.
  7. Sometimes people don’t have any money to buy food. This

    might be because: • the work they do doesn’t pay them enough or •they are sick and can’t work or • they have to take care of others and can’t go to work Children with parents that don’t have enough money to buy food, will be hungry too.
  8. To receive food, you need a food voucher. This is

    available from different organisations across the Wirral. The voucher is taken to one of our centres, where the food is given out.
  9. This is the amount of food that is given to

    a single person to last for 3 days. It weighs 7.46 kg and would cost £9.20 in a supermarket.
  10. This is the amount of food that is given to

    a family of 2 adults and 2 children to last for 3 days. It weighs 20.64 kg and would cost £25.50 in a supermarket.
  11. • Take home one of the shopping lists that we’ve

    given to your teachers. • Tell your family about the Wirral Foodbank, and what it does. • Choose something from the shopping list that you will buy. • Bring the item or items into school, where a collection will be made.
