WHAT AM I DOING & WHAT IS THAT?
NEIL SWEENEY Software Engineer at Dootrix 19 years working with
the web 10 years professional
WHO SAID? WHAT AM I DOING & WHAT IS THAT?
PRETTY MUCH EVERY DEVELOPER & DESIGNER (EVER!)
A QUICK HISTORY...
WHEN I FIRST STARTED 1997 - 2000 Layouts done by
table Frames where the dogs "particulars" Animated GIFs EVERWHERE...
WEB GETS NOTICED 2000 - 2004 CSS started becoming more
common Also PHP and ASP started making more (web) ground DHTML pages became the new GIFs...
"THE UNI YEARS" 2004 - 2007 Started to lose interest
due to personal reasons Thought I knew better - read, "became an asshole" One key saving grace... Nick Whitelegg taught PHP!
FIRST 5 WORKING YEARS 2007 - 2012 Learning to develop
in a business and part of a team Realising that you need to give yourself home and course work to do Learning to take critisim for what it is
LAST 5 WORKING YEARS 2012 - NOW JavaScript becoming one
of the most popular languages Frameworks and tools coming and going quicker than ever Being an expert in one thing doesn't seem as viable*
WHAT DID I LEARN IN THAT TIME? 5 KEY THINGS
1. LEARN THE FUNDAMENTALS
2. DON'T GET COMPLACENT
3. SURROUND YOURSELF WITH PEERS
4. CHALLENGE YOURSELF
5. ENJOY WHAT YOU DO
BONUS...
DON'T BE AN ASSHOLE!
WOLFIEZERO.COM / @WOLFIEZERO THANK YOU!
