  1. HOW TO ORGANIZE Have a main resume to track your

    full vita and history Mirror your main resume to LinkedIn Customize your resume for each position you apply for Clone your main resume and remove elements that are not relevant to the position Save as a .docx for editability Save as PDF to lock in formatting and archiving Submit the format best suitable for the application The .docx format is easiest to parse for scanning by ATS (Applicant Tracking System) Update your resume at least each year at annual review time when you are already reflecting on what you have accomplished
  2. Do •Tell the truth •Have a good summary •This is

    your “elevator pitch” •Use buzzwords from the industry •Include “soft skills” / “professional skills” too •Optimize your resume to get past the ATS (Applicant Tracker System) •Cut it down to the most important information •List education OR work experience first, whichever is most important to the role applying for Don’t •Make general claims (“good communication skills”) without having examples ready •Submit your resume from the LinkedIn build resume option GENERAL
  3. EDUCATION Do • Include things you are learning Don’t •

    Mislead employers about your GPA, skills or abilities • List the dates you graduated • Don’t list high school on your resume, unless you just graduated
  4. EXPERIENCE Do •Highlight your most relevant experiences •Include volunteer or

    other relevant non-work experience •If you’re underqualified, highlight transferable skills •Include personal accomplishments. •Have a link to any portfolio or GitHub account you have that can show off your work •Can include volunteer, school, open source and mock projects Don’t •Put past experiences that you never want to do again •Don’t include obvious skills that everyone is expected to have •E.g., email, Internet, Microsoft Word and Excel •Don’t include random, unrelated, or off-putting hobbies •Don’t worry if you don’t have the exact skillset
  5. CONTACT INFO & REFERENCES Do • Include contact info •

    Be sure to have a professional email address Don’t • Put your picture on your resume. (Don’t include anything that could be discriminated against.) • Put your address on your resume. (Don’t include anything confidential.) • List “references available upon request”
  6. FORMATTING Do • Have a consistent, easily-readable format • Use

    bullet points • Use data and be sure to use digits and not words (“four” vs 4) • Use powerful, action-oriented verbs • Keep it to one page, if possible. If not, fill up the 2nd page • Have someone proofread it and be sure to use spell check Don’t • Use a complicated resume template • Don’t go overboard with fonts, format, or text effects
