  1. Anna Dyderska April 2022 HOW DID I BECOME A HIKER?

How looking for friends helped me starting a new hobby
  2. MOVING TO THE UK You can’t have a hobby if

you work 24/7 • When I moved to UK in 2016, I was able to get weekends free of work– which was great! • Having this new time at hand I joined “Active UK” – a Polish group of hikers on Facebook, just to reach out to new friends • The Polish group organised many free, open to group members walks in the Lakes and the Peak District, which were fairly easy to join • I also joined British groups of hikers; however, I haven’t found any group which would organise events in the same way, but I am still looking! 2
  3. 3 • My friend from the “Active UK” always wanted

me to walk up Scaffel Pike with them, but I refused as I didn’t feel experienced enough • Surprisingly, I ended up spending the New Year’s Eve with a completely new group of people in the Wales, Snowdonia • My other friend from Poland, who was an accomplished mountaineer, joined too • We did go up the “knife-edged” Crib Goch and climbed Tryfan! • My “Active UK” friend wasn’t happy, but we did Scaffel Pike and many other peaks afterwards and we are still very close friends ☺ MY FIRST PROPER CLIMB Sometimes it is better if you don’t know you are about to do something big
  4. REDISCOVERING POLISH TATRY I don’t really know why I was

always choosing the Polish sea over the Polish Tatry Mountains for holidays! 4
  5. HIKING GEAR Mountains are free (mostly), but hiking isn’t completely

a free hobby Basic Stuff • Good hiking shoes • Hiking socks (my first hiking socks costed almost the same money as shoes! You can’t go cheap on them) • Waterproof coat or at least waterproof cape • Backpack • Smart Phone with an outdoor map application Good to have • Thermal clothing (regulates body temperature, wicking sweat etc.) • Outdoors trousers (especially when climbing is involved) • Head torch • Additional layer of warm clothing for colder months • Crampons – mountaineering spikes • And maybe another phone just for emergency communication 5
  6. HIKING AND YOUR HEALTH Hiking is a lifestyle, not a

range of events Basic Requirements • You need to be used to walking at least couple of kilometers without any problems • Climbing at heights is more difficult than just walking straight , start with easier paths • You need to remember about your health in between hikes – otherwise you will hate this experience How to prepare? • Walking, Slow jogging • Yoga – helps with any muscle pains • Bouldering – the type of climbing without line support • Reading about walking routes and watching videos 6
