The entire video file had to be downloaded prior to playback, leading to long buffer times for large files. Client compatibility, accessibility, and video quality were also challenges. SOLUTION • AWS Elemental MediaConvert generates HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) outputs enabling adaptive bitrate (ABR) streaming • Quality-Defined Variable Bitrate (QVBR) mode in MediaConvert automatically adjusts bitrate to maintain consistent video quality and save bandwidth • Amazon Transcribe generates line-by-line, time-stamped transcriptions for captions BENEFITS • Shared clips are universally playable, transcoded to HLS video for smooth playback in seconds, a process that previously took several minutes • Video quality is improved, using QVBR and 1080p resolution, with better text legibility when screen sharing • Automatic caption creation improves accessibility and searchability of clips We wanted to make files playable as soon as possible, without investing in media infrastructure. With MediaConvert, our streaming playback has been improved by orders of magnitude, and now buffering is negligible to the customer experience. —Kelly Moran, Senior Staff Technical Lead Manager, Slack Company: Slack Industry: Enterprise Country: United States Website: slack.com About Slack Slack is the productivity platform that empowers everyone with no-code automation and AI, makes search and knowledge sharing seamless, and keeps teams connected and engaged.
