  2. TOWARDS A DEFINITION “….development that meets the needs of the

  3. BUSINESS DEFINITIONS “For the business enterprise, sustainable development means adopting

business strategies and activities that meet the needs of the enterprise and its stakeholders today while protecting, sustaining and enhancing the human and natural resources that will be needed in the future.”
  4. BUSINESS DEFINITIONS "Eco-efficiency is achieved by the delivery of competitively

priced goods and services that satisfy human needs and bring quality of life, while progressively reducing ecological impacts and resource intensity throughout the life-cycle to a level at least in line with the earth’s carrying capacity."
  5. LECTURE SUMMARY • Human well-being and development is inextricably linked

with the natural environment • Sustainability and sustainable development has three dimensions – Environmental, Social and Economic • Business and the economy cannot exist outside society and society cannot exist outside of the environment • When defining sustainability it is the context within which the definition is applied that is more important than its wording
