ATSUKO You're so tender with her
ATSUKO It seems caring for a child comes as naturally
to you as swordplay.
YOJIRO She is unusually well behaved. And, I have some
experience with children.
ATSUKO Experience?

YOJIRO I was an orphan.
YOJIRO I spent my youth in the streets of Kyoto.
I took it upon myself to feed and protect the younger ones.

YOJIRO How did I become a samurai and master swordsman
in one of the most powerful houses in the Shogunate?
None

YOJIRO Like all boys,
YOJIRO we‘d often play swordsman in the streets.
YOJIRO Weʼd fashion swords
from bamboo
YOJIRO and tree
YOJIRO branches.
YOJIRO I was 5 years old
YOJIRO when I discovered that I could
YOJIRO see
YOJIRO between the moments.
YOJIRO I could predict my opponent's movements
YOJIRO and thus move and strike
YOJIRO before they could even react.

YOJIRO When I was 7
YOJIRO I discovered I could earn money
YOJIRO by challenging the older boys to duels.
YOJIRO When I was 15
YOJIRO I was going to Sake houses
YOJIRO and market places and challenging adults
YOJIRO winning yen, food, whatever i could to keep the
neighborhood kids fed.

YOJIRO Unfortunately
YOJIRO I earned a reputation.
YOJIRO One day, a very rich
YOJIRO very arrogant young samurai in training challenged me
YOJIRO offering a bag of gold.
YOJIRO When I beat him, he became enraged
YOJIRO dropped his stick
YOJIRO pulled his sword
YOJIRO and attacked.

YOJIRO I easily disarmed him broke his nose and shattered
his collar bone.
YOJIRO His father, a high-ranking noble
YOJIRO demanded that I be put to death.
YOJIRO However, The young man's sensei, Grandmaster Shogo Miyagi offered
an alternative.
YOJIRO I was to
YOJIRO become his apprentice.
None
YOJIRO I cooked his meals, laundered his clothes
YOJIRO cleaned his dojo and learned the way of the
sword.

YOJIRO When I was 18, he presented me with these
swords
YOJIRO And told me there was nothing more he could
teach me.
YOJIRO For the next 45 years, they were my only
friends.
YOJIRO I dedicated my life to instructing soldiers in the
way of the sword.
YOJIRO Then came the Meiji restoration. I saw the country
change around me. Much of it for the better.
YOJIRO But in this world swords are banned.
YOJIRO I was an orphan once again.
None
YOJIRO I concealed my swords and wandered, a masterless Ronin.
YOJIRO Itʼs a terrible thing
YOJIRO to have no purpose.
YOJIRO Then, one day
YOJIRO I stumbled into that restaurant. Iʼve been there ever
since.
YOJIRO That is my place in this new world.
YOJIRO Serving Katsudon,
YOJIRO Donkatsu and Udon.
YOJIRO This is why I tell you to abandon this
way of life.
YOJIRO It will do nothing but bring you pain, and
then leave you with heartache...
