  1. gate A picture of a gate with swinging doors. To

avoid confusion with 戸 door, you may wish to associate this kanji with the gates to a mansion, temple, or palace. Gate is a common wrapping element: draw gate first, and then another element in the empty space.
  2. question 門 gate + 口 mouth The mouth is the

gate through which questions are asked. You come across a gate with a mouth, which tells you, “If you want to enter, you’ll have to answer my questions.”
  3. interval 門 gate + 日 day I don’t have a

watch, so I use the position of the sun within the front gate to measure intervals of time. Bill Gates recommends rebooting your computer at regular intervals—in fact, every day.
  4. open 門 gate + 开 two hands The gate was

so heavy that I used two hands to open it. (Modern doors knobs are much more convenient!)
  5. hear 門 gate + 耳 ear The best way to

hear a secret: put your ear to the gate.
  6. un- Picture the doors to a jail cell: the horizontal

lines can be bars, or a prisoner’s fingers as he tries to pry the door open. He wishes he could undo his crime, unlock the door, and escape unnoticed! We will also use jail as a more concrete image for this element.
  7. sad 非 jail + 心 heart Sadness can feel like

your heart is suffering behind bars in jail. You wish someone would unlock the door and cheer you up.
  8. stairs * My staircase used to have 五 five stairs,

but now the top 一 one is missing. Write this element just like 五 five without the top stroke.
  9. difference stairs + 口 mouth + ヰ hashtag + 辶

road My roommate doesn’t understand the difference between her own room and the staircase. She’s always standing in the middle of the stairs, running her mouth or checking hashtags on Twitter, and completely blocking the path. Every time I complain, she says it’s just a difference of opinions.
