  1. IELTS Format The test has got four sections; listening, reading,

writing and speaking and the candidates are evaluated on all these parameters and graded from 0 to 9. The speaking test is conducted separately whereas the other three (Listening, Reading, Writing or LRW) are organised together. These grades are known as ‘bands’ and the average of the four sections is your overall IELTS band. Although the higher the better, the band required for various purposes, from studies to work differs from country to country and case to case.
  2. Report The writing is the last part of the academic

LRW test and consists of two tasks; a report and an essay. Both the tasks need to be completed in one hour. A report is a written account of something that has been observed. The test taker is provided with some data in form of tables, charts, processes or maps and it has to be completed in about 20 minutes and must be at least 150 words long.  The first one is task completion which decides if the student has addressed all the parts of the task or not. These parts in terms of a report are to summarise the given data as well as to make comparisons where relevant.  The second is about the sequencing and paragraphing skills and is called coherence and cohesion.  The last two deal with your vocabulary and range of grammar.
  3. 5 Tips for IELTS Report Writing is one of the

toughest parts of the IELTS test and with the modern age, internet and mobile phones, most of us have forgotten the art of writing. However, there are simple things that you can keep in mind while writing the report and score well.
  4. 1. Time Management  Report should take about 20 minutes

for you to complete and you must ensure to do it in the time since you will need a full 40 minutes for the essay which is longer and carries more weight. The first few minutes of these 20 minutes must be spent understanding the data and finding highlights from it. You must note the time, the units, the subject and the comparisons at this time.
  5. 2. The structure of the report  Report also, like

the essay, has an introduction where you rephrase what is given, an overview which is like the conclusion and the body which is where the actual data is reported. The overview can come after the introduction or at the end, the choice is yours. Please give the actual data in the main body of the report and if there are numbers or percentages given, they must be given in the report too.
  6. 3. No Analysis  Students lose marks while writing a

report because they try to report more than what is given. For example, you could be given the greenhouse gas emissions for a few countries over the 20th century for reporting. You should only report the data but if you know the subject, you may analyse why the emissions are increasing or decreasing which is wrong. There should be no analysis in the report only a representation of the given data. Do not reach any conclusion without it being given directly.
  7. 4. Write an Overview  Overview is the most essential

part of a report that tries to bring out the salient points of a report. You can call it a conclusion and place it in the end or immediately after the introduction but you must provide it. It could be the highest and the lowest points of the data for example.
  8. 5. Proofread and edit  What do you do once

you are done with your report? You proofread, that’s what. Always leave some minutes in the end for editing your report and removing any unforced grammatical errors like spelling mistakes. This is essential because the best of us make mistakes while under test conditions and writing to a deadline. An average student who meticulously proofreads is likely to do better than a good student who does not check his writing in the end. You can keep the proofreading for both the writing tasks at the end to be done together or you could do it individually after each task.
