  1. Cruise Itinerary • Quick Chat: Why Formalize Mentorship/Onboarding? • Mentorship

Basic Tenets • Vitals Interns: A Learning Experience ◦ Project Based Mentorship ◦ Onboarding “Culture” and Domain Knowledge ◦ Leveling Up Skills • Champagne Toast* *(not really)
  2. Basic Tenets * There is no “one size fits all”

way to onboard an employee, mentor someone, or run an internship. * There is no hacky way to do this - good onboarding and mentorship take thought and time. * Adjust the plan as you go and don’t be afraid to scrap things that aren’t working.
  3. Project-Based Mentorship • Assign a mentee a project with well-defined

criteria and a clear end goal • Set a hard deadline ◦ E.g. a date to demo the project • Give support throughout • Assess afterwards
  4. UBD & Backwards Planning Understanding By Design: • Think purposefully

about curriculum planning • Focus on student gaining understanding through authentic performance • Coaching over “transmitting” knowledge • Engage facets of understanding: explain, interpret, apply, assess Backwards Planning: • Plan curriculum “backwards” using a step-by-step design process
  5. Step One: Identify The End Goal Identify the main goal

you want a person to accomplish in a given amount of time. • Concrete and measurable • Clear output ...it should also be realistic.
  6. Step Two: Chunk Up The Tasks Break down the goal.

Identify specific tasks someone would have to do in order to produce the intended output. Better yet - have the mentee help you with this task!
  7. Step Three: Break Down The Skillz Break down the skills.

For each task, identify what the person will be able to do by the end of the task. “<Person> will be able to _______”
  8. Step Four: “Scaffold” • For each task leading up to

the main goal, create a small related project that will help your mentee develop the skills needed for the task. • Build projects on top of each other and introduce new concepts systematically.
  9. Walk(through) It Out Code Walkthrough: Identify the key part(s) of

your application that warrant a walkthrough or overview. Career Walkthrough: Identify a person within each department that is interested in being shadowed for an afternoon.
  10. Was It Successful? • What did Paul and Sarina think

about their experience? • What did Vitals think? • How did the project go?
