This project, “Breath”, began during a workshop with Hyein Park and has now grown into a fully polished piece.
The story is inspired by my very first part-time job experience in Canada, which I adapted into a storyboard with a bit of humor.
At that time, the anxiety of being in a new environment made it feel difficult even to breathe. I kept asking myself, “When will I truly feel comfortable here?” And I realized — it’s when I feel a sense of belonging.
That thought led me to create Mari, a fish character who can’t breathe outside of water and depends on a fishbowl. By combining this idea with the theme of belonging, I tried to weave it all into the story.
Throughout the process, I focused on how to bring the character to life — making emotions more authentic and relatable for the audience. I also studied various works to learn how to use camera direction that best fits each situation and emotion. Through this project, I was able to deepen my understanding of character emotions, comedy, and visual storytelling.
Finally, I’d like to dedicate this piece to everyone who is struggling in a new environment, carrying their own “fishbowl” with them.
