Dr Alessandra Zampieri, Head of the Maritime Affairs Unit at the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC), explains the EU's ongoing commitment to Arctic research, highlighting research, monitoring and Earth observation infrastructure that help the fishing, shipping, resource exploration, and tourism industries.

    local: re-supply vessels for Arctic community • Very few regional transits: North East Passage 60-80 transits per year • Seasonal, July – October, but increasing trends (ice receding) • Challenges due to shallow waters, poor or even unchartered areas, absence of infrastructures • Main traffic: re-supply vessels, bulk cargo, tourism and fishing What is needed • Evaluation at regional scale of volume/trends • Coherent information over years • Information on its distribution in different sub-regions

    shipping, exploration, tourism) at regional scale is a pre- requisite for Blue Growth in the Arctic  Research can help in improving such knowledge in a coherent way to support operational authorities and policy makers  Knowledge can be further improved by collaboration and information sharing – Blue Hub to gather / analyse / share data
