  1. first, you have to ask for help • be specific

    • ask for introductions • get your resume reviewed • no to: code challenge help, nepotism
  2. how do you tell if you have a good mentor?

    • you should be able to point to tangible ACTIONS by your mentor • a mentor should check in on you • you should feel energized, confident, supported, etc
  3. a good mentor teaches • your mentor should not make

    decisions for you • they give direction, input, and feedback • they teach you how to interpret companies & offers • they remind you of your values
  4. a bad mentor sees you as an extension • be

    wary of “you remind me of myself” • they might try to fix what their own career missteps • they can be blinded to your challenges • a mentoring relationship should only benefit the mentor incidentally
  5. what do i do if i have a bad mentor

    and i'm trying to find a job?
  6. follow up! • share what came of the leads they

    gave you • don’t be afraid to be honest • send thank you emails • buy them lunch when you get that first paycheck!
