Saenz Jonathan (Jasper) Sherman-Presser Two questions: Will people touch/interact with the green desk? Will the green desk make people feel more calm?
Hypotheses 1. People will interact with the green desk while
working at the laptop/desktop 2. People will feel more calm as a result of interacting with the green desk
Prototype • 2 trials of 1 hour/each at the GSB
library • Asked people to place the green desk around their laptop as they worked for ~10 min. • Collected observation and survey data
Results (N=6) 1. Interactions/touches • "Never" = 1 • "1-2"
times = 1 • "3-5" times = 4 note: self report data • "0-3" secs = 3 • "3-10" secs = 2* • < 30 secs = 1* (feet) note: one person "never" 2. Satisfaction/Calm • "Calmed" = 2 • "Soothed" = 2 • "Relaxed" = 2 • "Energized"* = 1 "the texture and the reminder of the outdoors [were soothing]"
Next steps • prolonged use (an entire afternoon) • not
in a public place • target desktop/stationery office workers • possible triggers ◦ alarms/texts/emails/chrome extension? • other body parts/feet • add a sensory experience to make multimodal ◦ fan for air flow ◦ aromatherapy associated with touch
