  1. ABOUT ▸ Complete platform for managing Docker containers ▸ Open

source ▸ Self-hosted ▸ Docker centric ▸ Private PaaS RANCHER
  2. ABOUT ▸ Small startup ▸ Mobile loyalty solutions ▸ Not

“at scale” (yet) ▸ > 3k active users / day ▸ Running NodeJS / Clojure services on the backend SWARM
  3. NODEJS ON PM2 ▸ Freedom to pick NodeJS version for

each service independently ▸ Support for Clojure * While there are ways to do both with pm2, Docker is a better abstraction
(at least for packaging)… SWARM: FROM PM2 (ON BARE METAL) TO DOCKER (IN THE CLOUD) We needed:
  4. HOW WE FOUND RANCHER ▸ Docker on it’s own is

not the answer… ▸ We need platforms / tools ▸ Something which is easy to setup ▸ Let’s not write our own AWS/Heroku ▸ But not happy with AWS either - preference for non- proprietary and open source ▸ Linux as the workhorse FTW OKAY DOCKER, BUT HOW…?
  5. ALTERNATIVES TO RANCHER ▸ There are lots out there…. ▸

    LOOKED AT ▸ Kubernetes http://kubernetes.io/ (too much complexity) ▸ Tectonic https://tectonic.com/ (hosted Kubernetes) ▸ Docker Cloud https://cloud.docker.com/ (hosted) ▸ AWS https://aws.amazon.com/ (1000+ options, I think Beanstalk was the closest) ▸ TODO ▸ Mesosphere DC/OS https://dcos.io/ (recently OSS’ed, looks very promising) ▸ OTHERS ▸ Vamp http://vamp.io/ ▸ Panamax http://panamax.io/ ▸ Shipyard http://shipyard-project.com/ ▸ PaaSTA https://github.com/Yelp/paasta
  6. AND YES, WE WANT MORE WISHLIST ▸ git push to

deploy ▸ Stability: some use cases still frail. Doesn’t have that “it just works” feeling you get when you use say nginx.
