  1. Evaluation Q7 Looking back to the preliminary task, what do

you feel that you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
  2. Conventions of magazine productions  The preliminary task not only

gave me an insight to magazine conventions it also allowed me to explore the many existing magazines which are available today and develop an understanding of the work which goes into the production of magazines.  I have learnt about the use of audience research, planning, analysis of existing magazines, record labels, genres and artist which has given me an understanding of the music industry and this let me incorporate some ongoing issues and ideas into my magazine to make it more realistic.
  3. Progress made from student magazine  My student magazine was

very much a rookie experiment, it was a chance for me to use my then basic understanding of magazines to construct my own one. It involved taking shots of a model and creating a front cover and contents page which would be aimed at students.  My music magazine was looked at from a different approach, a large amount of audience research, planning , editing and analysis was done in order to achieve a finished product. The process in which I created the music magazine differed greatly from that of the student magazine as I had a very good understanding of magazines and their conventions. 4. Planning  Planning for the preliminary task was very brief

and only included noting the different aspects of a magazine in order to know how to make one. I analysed two different front covers and then began to construct my own magazine.  Planning for the music magazine was in depth, I began planning by creating a profile of all aspects I would need in my magazine such as models, themes, artist’s names, masthead ideas, chosen genre and mise-en-scene I also created some flat plans of the DPS and contents page, after I had planned all of that I began looking at existing magazines and finished my planning by sketching some DPS, front cover and contents pages.
  5. Research  My research for the preliminary task was not

in depth all at I looked at a few existing magazines as part of my analysis and that gave me and idea of the structure my magazine would have to take and the conventions it would have to contain.  As part of my research for the music magazine I looked into my chosen genre which was R&B and created a mood board of my genre which gave me an idea of the culture and background. After this I did in depth research into existing magazine companies such as VIBE, Q, KERRANG and Billboard which gave me an idea of the level of quality associated with such well known companies the last part of my research was case studies of established artists such as Rihanna and case studies of established record labels such as Def Jam.
  6. Initial designs/drafts  My preliminary task was completed without any

drafting and very little planning, I put everything together with one process and completed it in one step.  My music magazine on the other hand was completed with a large amount of drafting and planning leading up to the creation of my final product below are some examples of the drafts:
  7. Final products  The finished student magazine was not as

good as the finished music magazine, the difference between both magazines could clearly be seen. Much more time, research and planning had been put into the music magazine as the student magazine enabled me to understand the conventions of magazines and helped with the construction of the music magazine.  In order to meet the expectations of my target audience my music magazine had to be of high quality and posses all necessary conventions of a music magazine and through extensive research, drafting and planning I believe my magazine will meet all expectations.
  8. What others have said After I completed my magazine I

asked 3 people to review it and their responses were:  Jordache: ‘’The magazine is very reminiscent of an R&B magazine and you can clearly see the structure and conventions of a music magazine, I particularly like the colour scheme”  Samuel: “The genre is really represented by the models as the highlight and represent the overall nature of the genre making the magazine very good and appealing to people who like R&B and young people like me, I would definitely buy it”  Calum: “In terms of meeting expectations, your magazine is very accurate and is very capable of being favoured by young people and even old, really good use of colour and editing, the DPS is really compelling”
