Why this project • ICNF published wealth of detailed fire data www.icnf.pt/portal/florestas/dfci/incendios-florestais/estatisticas/estatistica-sgif Consistent and well structured, however: – hard to find – stored in proprietary formats (Zipped Excels) – licensing unclear – not documented • End users need appropriate tools and visualizations to make sense out of 350.000 occurrences
4. Our approach • Web-based • Responsive • Exploring data by: – location (administrative area) – stories
5. Prepping the data • > 350.000 occurrences, stored in 6 Excel files • Script everything • When not possible, document • Tools used: csvkit, ogr, Tilemill, QGIS • Pre-processed data in Mongo for speed
6. Technology behind it • Express JS (Node) • Chosen • MongoDB • Leaflet • Morris • Mapbox
7. Future plans • Launch & open source it • Explore individual fires • Improve visualizations (show the depth of dataset) • Access to Data API, enhance Open Data side
