Discovery Sprints For Developers Overview

Discovery Sprints For Developers Overview

Discovery sprints are becoming an increasingly common way to step back from the sprint cycle and dig deep into the current status and future goals of an application, product, or even overall architecture design. Instead of producing shippable code, the goal is to gain a deeper understanding of your app/product/item and its users, a clear idea of where it should go next that's supported by both user research and technical considerations, and a roadmap to get there.

What does it look like when product owners, designers, developers, and support get together to do user research, technical design, and strategic planning instead of focusing only on the next MVP? What can developers bring to this effort, and what can they learn from it?

In my talk, I'll answer these questions with examples from the recent NPR Digital Platform Discovery Sprint I facilitated. I'll share what worked for us, what absolutely didn't work, how we decided it was the right time to do a discovery sprint in the first place, and ideas for how to convince your workplace to spend more time on discovery!
