The Restoring of Navigation on the Kentucky River

Over the past fifteen years or so the Commonwealth of Kentucky and its lead agencies the Kentucky River Authority (KRA) and Finance Cabinet have been funding lock and dam inspections, evaluations and rehabilitation projects on the Kentucky River.  Engineering firms Bergmann Associates and Stantec have primarily assisted the KRA with these projects.  After completing the rehabilitation construction for Locks 1 through 4 in early 2015, the KRA officially re-opened roughly 82 miles of the river to navigation in June of that year, allowing river traffic from above the state capital at Frankfort to the mouth of the Kentucky River, at the confluence to the Ohio River and upstream of the City of Louisville, KY.
