  1. About History • Started in 2004 – Jakob Lodwick &

Zach Klein (as a means of organizing their videos). • Only a sideline for them as already involved in other online projects – parent company called ‘Connected Ventures’ • VIMEO – a play on the word ‘video’ inserting the word ‘me’.
  2. About Growth Strategy • ‘Connected Ventures’ taken over by InterActiveCorp

(IAC) in 2006 – VIMEO was struggling at this stage. • From 2007 onwards decided to develop VIMEO with 2 key strategies…. Doing things differently from YouTube Offering services not available on any other video sharing system
  3. About • Vimeo was founded by filmmakers who wanted to

share their creative work and personal moments from their lives. • As time went on, likeminded people discovered Vimeo and helped build a supportive community of individuals with a wide range of passions. Promotes videos on their front page due to merit – not popularity
  4. About Vimeo prides itself on "providing a safe and positive

environment for people to share their videos," says Blake Whitman, Vimeo's community director. That means no porn, no TV and movie clips or trailers and nothing uploaded on the site that's not user-generated - as well as a strong community ethic against "negative" content and comments The Community
  5. About Vimeo Firsts • Introduced new features before they eventually

became standards elsewhere…. • Offered the ability to make videos private which appealed to those who only wanted to share with a handful of people. • Community is a very important concept for VIMEO - adopted the name "Vimeans", meaning a member of the Vimeo community
  6. About Vimeo Exclusives • Users could select certain photos from

their Flickr account to appear underneath a related video – became a widely used tool • VIMEO users could download the original file that the video’s author uploaded – encouraged notion of collaboration and creativity – central to VIMEO’s ideology. Setting Vimeo apart from other user generated content sites
  7. About Vimeo Exclusives • VIMEO users could download the original

file that the video’s author uploaded – encouraged notion of collaboration and creativity – central to VIMEO’s ideology. Setting Vimeo apart from other user generated content sites • Increased the download allowance from 5 Mb per week, when first launched, up to 5 Gigabytes now. • Vimeo allows Plus users to upload an uninterupted file of five gigs per week — thats 2.5hrs of HD video.
  8. About Other Media • "Rich world of Social Media explored

by Fast Media Group.“ • "Vimeo Extras - a revolution in the market." abc news • "Fast Media Group is a gift for Internet marketers."
  9. About By The Numbers • Vimeo has over 16,000 videos

uploaded daily. • Vimeo attracts 70 million unique visitors per month and boasts more than 12 million registered users. • 25-35 year olds account for over 70% of Vimeo users. • YouTube is the most popular video-sharing service used by bloggers to embed and link to videos within blog posts with 81.9% market share. Vimeo is second with 8.8%, while Dailymotion is third with 4%. • If YouTube is taken out of the equation, the most popular video- sharing service used by bloggers to embed and link to videos is Vimeo (48.7%).
  10. Ethos Vimeo feels that online video and creativity are transitioning

from an age of wonder to an age of action. Video has revealed itself to be a medium of incredible power and potential, and we are on the cusp of fulfilling the promises of the first act. Vimeo actively encourages the idea of creative content, not only in its rules and ethos but also in its Video School and film festival. “The aim of the Vimeo Festival + Awards is to become the gold standard for creative online video,” said Jeremy Boxer, Director of the Vimeo Festival + Awards. “We designed the program to focus on discovering the best new talent and to give that talent a platform that will catapult their careers to the next level.
  11. Vimeo Video School Vimeo Video School can help anyone sharpen

their skills or pick up a few new ones. Our lessons are fun and friendly, and often make use of helpful video tutorials created by Vimeo members. Learn how to make better videos through lessons, tutorials, and sage advice from us, your friendly personal creativity consultants
  12. Social Impact The social impact of Vimeo can be seen

with the success of Rick Mereki’s mini series of films. ‘MOVE’ ‘LEARN’ ‘EAT’ These vides went viral across Vimeo and have clocked up millions of views, shares, comments and likes across the world. We can also see the social impact of Vimeo in the success of its filmmakers and the a
  13. Vimeo as a Cultural Archive Vimeo is a living archive

of contemporary culture from a large and diverse range of sources continuously evolving time capsule, where new cultural “memories” are stored both as they happen and on a retroactive basis. When the content hosted by Vimeo depends on the uploads of individual users, where users from certain global regions and socioeconomic circumstances blatantly lack representation on the site (due to both language barriers and lack of access), can Vimeo ever be considered any semblance of a realistic cultural record?
  14. Manuel Castells Vimeo fits perfectly into Castells’ hypothesis where he

argues that, with the advent of new media (such as the likes of Vimeo, YouTube). “Instead of a global village we are moving towards mass production of customized cottages. While there is oligopolistic concentration of multimedia around the world, there is at the same time…increasing interaction by and among the individuals that break up the uniformity of a mass audience”
  15. Manuel Castells In other words, Castells would argue that Vimeo

is, to some extent, a “cultural archive” compiled in part by users. After all, he recognizes that the “new media system is moving towards interactivity” However, he would also be certain to mention that Vimeo can nonetheless not be considered a complete “cultural archive” by any standards as it, like much of the rest of the culture of “real virtuality” perpetuates social exclusion by failing to include and incorporate what he calls the “fourth world of exclusion
  16. A Change In Thinking “Vimeo created a platform that has

changed the language of storytelling,” said Eliot Rausch, 2010 Vimeo Award Grand Prize Winner. “The way we share our innermost being has been flipped on its head — a true revolution of consciousness. It is indescribable, the feeling I have after winning the award, knowing my voice has been heard, that millions have been touched and maybe the world is better because of it.”
  17. The White House The Whitehouse began uploading videos in January

2009 as Obama’s first presidential address was available on the site the following week. Since then 657 videos have been uploaded by the Whitehouse to the video-sharing social media site. Whitehouse spokesman Nick Shapiro said "The weekly address is just one example of the Obama administration using cutting-edge technologies to create a new level of transparency, accountability, and participation for America's citizens.”
  18. The White House Technology has profoundly impacted how – and

where – we all consume information and communicate with one another. WhiteHouse.gov is an important part of the Administration’s effort to use the internet to reach the public quickly and effectively Vimeo has now become a platform that allows the political remit of the government to reach people anywhere in the country.
  19. Kony 2012 Plays: 18.2 million, Likes: 21.6k, Comments: 1,291 It

has attracted over 18 million views since appearing on Vimeo which is fairly amazing considering 1) It’s about something most people had never heard of and 2) it’s a half-an-hour long. (The average viral video on YouTube is two minutes or less.) This earnest effort to bring Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony to justice and free the thousands of “invisible children” that he has abducted and pressed into soldiering and sex-slavery
  20. Kony 2012 Plays: 18.2 million, Likes: 21.6k, Comments: 1,291 On

March 21, 2012, a resolution "condemning Joseph Kony and his ruthless guerrilla group for a 26-year campaign of terror" was put forward by Senators Jim Inhofe and Chris Coons. The resolution stated that it would back "the effort of Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic and the newest country, South Sudan, to stop Kony and his Lord's Resistance Army", along with an official statement of support "for the U.S. effort to help regional forces pursue commanders of the militia group." The resolution has received support from 37 bipartisan senators.
  21. Looking Forward Could it be that Vimeo, and other high,

higher and highest-tech sites like it, will effectively replace the "studio" in years to come? That they will act as a gigantic clearing house and gleaming shop window for the brightest and best young film-makers? Of course, this leaves untouched the eternal question of how these creators are going to get paid. In movies, as in music and publishing, content-providers can't live on air. But in the meanwhile, Vimeo provides some gorgeous fascination.
