  2. What Is OpenSourcery About? • Show people open source projects

of interest ◦ Database for open source projects ◦ Search for projects by languages, companies, or contributors
  3. Issues We Ran Into • Beautifying the splash page and

other UI troubles • Dealing with TypeScript and compiling it • Scraping large amount of data ◦ Github limited to 5000 requests per hour ◦ Invalid data, had to clear junk data manually ◦ Site was slow without lazy loading • Complexity of using Angular 2 ◦ tons of indirection • That one time GitHub got DDOS-ed • Separation of responsibilities is hard
  4. What Puzzles Us? • The initial load is too long

    • No “no results found” for search results • Creating good UX designs
  5. What Did We Do Well? • Met all project requirements

    • Lazy loaded a lot of data • No broken features • thorough documentation • Simple design, Easy to navigate, intuitive
  6. What Did We Learn? • A whole lot of technologies

and tools • Agile Development • A lot of people put bogus location data and have non-professional GitHub profile pictures (highlight of our project) • Data modeling • The true power of friendship and working together in a team
  7. What Can We Improve On? • Nicer design ◦ Each

page of the database to default to more than 5 items ◦ Better display for search results • Have a variety of media feeds, not just pictures • Add other open source hosting resources to the database
  8. What Did StartupFairy Do Well? • A+ Twitter feed integration

    • Overall aesthetic is quite appealing • Domain name .com instead of .me (more professional) • The about page stats for each person only appears when you hover
  9. What Did We Learn From StartupFairy? • Everything that they

did well • We should use a flat design for our visuals • Cool facts about startups!
  10. What Puzzles Us About StartupFairy? • General Issues: ◦ Don't

like pagination on model pages ◦ footer text on the right on not-home pages ◦ design: model page lists could use space better • Search Issues: ◦ pagination inconsistent ◦ page indices go negative ◦ improper error checking (when page goes beyond results) ◦ search page case sensitive highlighting but not case sensitive search ◦ loading search page has filler text ◦ and/or buttons don't seem to do anything
  11. What Could StartupFairy Do Better? • Home page words are

hard to see • Tweet text too big • City page could use a map
