  1. one  One line. Write from left to right. 

    As a kanji element, we will also use it to mean floor or ceiling, depending on position.
  2. mouth  A simple picture of a mouth. Kanji do

    not use circles, so we must use a square instead.  As a kanji element, it can refer to any opening - the mouth of a jar, or the mouth of a river, or the entrance to a cave, etc.
  3. day  Open the window, it’s a new day! 

    A day is split into two halves, AM and PM.  As a kanji element, it can mean day or sun.
  4. month  A month is longer than a day, and

    this stylized picture of the crescent moon also has longer legs.  Element meanings: month, moon; flesh or part of the body
  5. rice field  A rice field seen from above. The

    center paths make it easy to do your gardening.  We will also call this element brain—think of the brain’s four lobes.
  6. eye  A strange sideways eye, rotated 90°. The top

    and bottom parts are white, and the middle is the colored iris.  As an element, this kanji may appear as-is on the left, or rotated on top: 罒. You may wish to remember the alternate version as look down on.
  7. old 十 ten + 口 mouth  I’ve heard the

    same story from ten different mouths. It’s really getting old!
  8. bright 日 sun + 月 moon  It’s very bright

    when both the sun and the moon are in the sky!
  9. early 日 day + 十 ten  In college, “early”

    means “starting your day before ten.”
  10. morning 十 ten + 早 early + 月 moon 

    Morning has come ten hours early, and the moon is still in the sky!
