swirl above a jagged cliff. Below: angry, water doing its best impression of certain death. Far across the canyon: a BRIDGE. Tiny. Suspended way down in the distance. MIFF marches forward with the courageous ignorance of a 9-year-old with a broadsword. On her shoulder—PIDGE, a giant pigeon, staring blankly into the void. MIFF Ooooof. Deeeep. Okay. We can fly over that easy, right, Pidge? …Pidge? Pidge slowly tilts his head at the clouds. Silent refusal. SFX: POOF Pidge snaps into his backpack form: a bird-shaped pack with tiny legs gently wrapped around Miff’s arms like straps. Miff exhales, already accepting this is on foot. She trudges toward the bridge. CUT TO: EXT. BRIDGE – DAY Miff arrives at the START of the bridge, slightly out of breath. She steps on. It immediately CREAKS, wincing like it’s remembering a traumatic past. MIFF I’m sure this is fine. A beat. A wooden plank SNAPS and plunges into the water below. From beneath, a CLAWED OCTOPUS TENTACLE lashes up, GRABS the broken plank— —then SMASHES it against the cliff face a few times for good measure. Miff looks in awe, pouting. Her one brain cell is trying to figure out if this is a bad idea.
the fog— TROLL KID (distant) You.. you.. there! A TROLL pops out. Small. Nervous. Holding a battered STOP sign like a shield. TROLL KID S—stop. Please. Like… Now… thanks. MIFF Oh! A bridge troll. Hi! She keeps walking, smiling. TROLL KID WAIT—no—STOP—I said stop. More like in a stopping way! He steps in front of her. Shaking. Miff gently moves him aside, completely weightless. The troll freezes. Then— He bursts into CHILDISH SOBBING. He collapses into the planks, crying dramatically. Wiping his snotty troll nose all over his crusty sleeves. Silence. We pull back to reveal, from under the bridge, an OLDER TROLL sitting on a porch carved into the jagged cliff face, reading a troll romance novel in an armchair. He wears a cardigan and reading glasses, looking knackered. He gets up and climbs a ladder toward the crying troll. OLDER TROLL …Heyyyy, buddy! No, no you’re doing great!
my son. He gestures to the crying troll. OLDER TROLL (CONT.) First day guarding the bridge. We’re… workshopping confidence. The kid continues sobbing into the ground. His sobs getting increasingly louder that Older Troll has to start shouting. TROLL KID (sobbing) I DIDN’T EVEN WANT TO BE A BRIDGE TROLL. I WANTED TO BE ON BROADWAY BUT I DIDN’T HAVE RAAAANGE. Troll kid bursts into his next round of sobs. Miff and Dad Troll look uncomfortable like they just witnessed someone be sick on the bus. OLDER TROLL (sighs) Could you maybe… let him have this one? For morale? Miff considers this very seriously. MIFF So if I fall off the bridge, does he win? OLDER TROLL Oh no, we normally do more of a- MIFF smiles and nods, ignoring the troll, then immediately backflips off the bridge. OLDER TROLL (CONT.) -riddles thing. MIFF AAAAA— But before she fully drops— Pidge changes, FEATHERS ERUPT.
. He catches Miff just enough to redirect her fall— —she glides awkwardly , spinning once in the air and lands HARD at the bottom of the cliff near the water with a dusty THUD. A beat. Silence. You good Miff? Miff sits up immediately. (phew.) MIFF …Haha! We almost died. PIDGE BIRD SCREAM Pidge immediately looks traumatised, trying to catch his breath, hyperventilating into a tiny brown paper bag he definitely did not have a second ago. Above, at the top of the cliff— The TROLL KID is visible again, peering over the edge. For a moment, he just stares. Then— He BURSTS INTO EXCITED CHEERING. Jumping. Pumping his fists. Full emotional reversal. He throws his arms around the OLDER TROLL. The Older Troll steadies him, surprised… then softens into a relieved smile. He looks down toward Miff. A tired, sincere THUMBS UP . Miff blinks. Then, after a beat— She raises her hand. A small, earnest THUMBS UP BACK . She smiles, this is what being a hero is all about.
how do we get out of here? The tentacled creature returns, suddenly grabbing Miff and Pidge and drags them both into the water. A few bubbles, then nothing. CUT TO BLACK.
