Working on a 12 year old free/open source software project that powers nearly a quarter of the internet* can be challenging, especially when your major priorities include the end user and backwards compatibility. I've learned a lot over the last several years in my unexpected journey to becoming one of just six lead developers: about balancing new users, fledgling developers, and future work as we continue to make changes to WordPress, and about understanding and respecting the history of a well-established project whose roots extend even further back.
