Histories of collection have been rightfully framed within colonial contexts of taking. As collecting institutions, repositories, and scholars grapple with these histories, we necessarily contend with process and practices of return and reuse. At the same time, digital technologies afford one avenue for return and reuse, but not without challenges related to proper citation, attribution, and protocols for access. This presentation will explore the ethical issues of archival returns through the Mukurtu Shared platform which is being developed in collaboration with Indigenous communities, the Mukurtu CMS team and federal collecting institutions.
