DONOR SPOTLIGHT UPCOMING EVENTS Bob Grand had been on the Little Red Door board for several years before he was approached to chair the Camp Little Red Door golf tournament. Before he took it over, the fundraiser only made about $20,000. In 2013, the tournament raised more than $140,000! “We’ve sold it out every year for a long time,” he said. “I think that’s an indication that people feel good about the mission itself.” The credit is due to Grand himself, who has been chairman of the event for more than 20 years. He has helped send more than 2,000 children with cancer come to camp, where they can regain a sense of normalcy. “I was looking for a way to be involved and frankly I had some experience in fundraising and the golf outing made a lot of sense for me,” he said. Director and CEO Fred Duncan said of Grand, “Bob is a tre- mendous friend to Little Red Door. His hard work and dedica- tion to the cause are what makes this event so successful.” (L-R) Bob Grand, Carlos Vidaurri, Mayor Greg Ballard, Sara Beard, Travis Simpson and Tom Coomes. CPS-3 Study 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m./ Dec. 6/ Little Red Door American Cancer Society is recruiting volunteers for a 30-year study on cancer prevention. 2. Trips to treatment a life- saver for LRD clients Winter

squash: a fall superfood CLIENT SPOTLIGHT HEALTHY TIPS Sherman Cossell was diag- nosed with lung cancer in June 2013 . For a while he depended on friends to take him to his chemo treatments. While at IU Health, he heard about Little Red Door’s transportation program. Client navigator Cynthia Ara- gon signed up Cossell for both the transportation and nutritional supplements program. Now he is almost done with six rounds of chemotherapy and is grateful to Little Red Door for giving him access to his life-saving treat- ments. The transportation program has been around for more than 50 years. Since January 2010, Lit- tle Red Door has provided more than 28,352 trips. This year, LRD will make almost 10,000 trips to life-saving chemo and radiation treatments, a 64% increase in- crease from last year. It is the big- gest service that Little Red Door provides to cancer patients. Navigators also distribute bus passes and gas cards as another way to get people to their treat- ments. Many courses of treatment require daily and weekly visits, and it is difficult for clients to find transportation for all those ap- pointments. “It’s definitely a huge barrier to accessing treatment,” Vice Pres- ident of Program Development Tanya Shelburne said. “You can’t get well if you can’t get to treat- ment.” 3 2 NEWSLETTER Vol. I, Issue 2 NEWSLETTER Vol. I, Issue 2 Little Red Door client Jerri Rose receives help from her Yellow Cab driver, Jeffrey Weber, as she attends the Fall 2013 Open House. Can be frozen. What is winter squash? Winter squash have hard skins and come in a variety of colors, textures and flavors. The most common varieties you’ll see in the store are acorn, butternut, spaghetti, hubbard and pumpkin. What’s in winter squash? Winter squash are excellent sources of vitamin A, vitamin C and dietary fiber. They are also a good way to get potassium. Winter squash, including pumpkins, are rich in carotenoids. These carotenoids, like beta-carotene and alpha-carotene, can act as antioxidants. Our bodies convert these carotenoids into vitamin A. This nutrient is important for immune function and maintaining healthy cells. The dietary fiber found in winter squash can lower cancer risk and help with weight control. It has been shown that diets high in di- etary fiber, carotenoids and vitamin C can lower the risk of colorectum, mouth, phar- ynx, larynx, lung and esophageal cancer.
