Prototyping – the benefits and what it can teach us about people

My slides from the UAL Futures #4 – UX in Context

Wednesday 2nd March 2016 saw an audience at Central Saint Martins in London with industry speakers including myself, providing our own perspectives on UX Design and we shared insights on one of the most in-demand of disciplines.

Hear how they do UX at Moving Brands, Radical Company and Well Made Studio and learn how you can apply user experience principles in different contexts, to make your projects, career, life, just a little bit better!

Students and graduates got practical advice on skills, tools and career paths, and saw how they could contextualise UX around their own ideas and ambitions.

  5. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

I believe that Design is more than just how things are displayed visually
  6. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

I believe that Design is a combination of how things look, read, work and delight people.

Prototype noun [proh-tuh-tahyp] A prototype is an early sample, model, or release of a product built to test a concept or process or to act as a thing to be replicated or learned from.
  8. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

Prototyping isn’t something new. It’s not something that just startups do.
  9. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

Da Vinci’s works included painting, sculpturing, mathemathics, engineering, architecture, music, anatomy, geology, geography and botany. The list goes on and on.
  10. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

Da Vinci was so far ahead of his time. His engineering prototypes predicted the future.
  11. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

Da Vinci was prototyping ideas 496 years ago...

Prototyping can help you make informed decisions. Informed decisions can lead to better results.
  13. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

It can lead to a quicker understanding of how your idea might help people with their problems.
  14. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

Putting something tangible in someone’s hand is extremely powerful.
  15. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

They can interact with their mouse, their fingers and their thumbs. This can help bring your idea to life.
  16. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

With the tools we have today you can get your idea into the hands of anyone, anywhere in the world.
  17. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

Download a UI kit for FREE. Build using the kit.
  18. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

You can do the same thing with a piece of paper and a pen.
  19. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

There are loads! New ones come out every week. Use what you feel comfortable with.
  20. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

What’s the best way to get your idea out there in the open?
  21. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

The following prototype was put together with very little effort using Sketch and Invision.
  22. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

It’s an extremely powerful way of telling the story behind your idea.
  23. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

Stitch screens together with simple interactions. Get a better sense of how things flow.
  24. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

Be simple with the way that you test your idea.
  25. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

Run through tasks and see how they react.
  26. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

This is invaluable information and can provide you with great insights.
  27. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

A lot of people believe that a highly polished design that has taken countless hours to make will be of the highest value....
  28. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

Don’t expect your first design will be ‘right’.
  29. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

You won’t learn much if you don’t show people your designs.
  30. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

The source of the highest value is the from the people you are designing for.
  31. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

Don’t be too precious about how things look.
  32. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

You can explain how something might work with a basic drawing or prototype which can be put together very quickly.
  33. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

Sit down with someone over a coffee. Ask questions. Get them to perform tasks. You’ll be amazed at what you can learn.
  34. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

Test with different people and document your findings. Record what they say. Record what they do. Ask them how they feel when you’re testing.
  35. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

You haven’t spent hours perfecting the design
  36. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

I’ll let you in on a little secret.
  37. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

Go back. Make some more changes. Test again.
  38. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

Nail down your flow with sketches and wireframes. You’ll move quicker when you need to present higher fidelity designs.
  39. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

Use prototyping to experiment with interactions.
  40. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

Step up the fidelity when you need to. Use tools like Pixate, FramerJS or even Keynote to start animating your interactions. This will help save a lot of developer pain. Trust me.
  41. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

Prototyping micro interactions will help you explain what you’re trying to do.
  42. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

To explain what we are trying to do.
  43. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

To explain our attempt at solving problems through design.
  44. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

To explain our design decisions through something tangible.
  45. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

Remember, a prototype is… built to test a concept or process or to act as a thing to be replicated or learned from.
  46. UAL Futures #4 – UX in CONTEXT Mark Jenkins @markjenkins

I used Designer News to crowdsource what prototyping means to the design community.
