Increased Focus on Career Readiness • A recent ECS report examined the policy efforts to improve alignment between high school and postsecondary career/technical education (CTE) programs and workforce needs. The report found that: – States have taken a statewide approach, creating or assigning an existing state-level entity to develop or revise career pathways. – States are encouraging or requiring the creation of regional partnerships of K-12, postsecondary and business/ industry partners to better align career pathways with workforce needs. – California has created one or more competitive grant programs to support local alignment initiative. Other states have made an appropriation to one or more statewide entities to finance such efforts. Zinth, J. (2015). Aligning K-12 and postsecondary career pathways with workforce needs. Increased Focus on Career Readiness • According to a recent report by the National Governors Association, using data to track recent graduates in the workforce helps ensure postsecondary education institutions are preparing graduates for successful careers. To evaluate postsecondary education and training programs, the report suggest governors should consider: – How their state is using data to improve educational system outcomes to benefit recent graduates, workers and employers – How the state is using education and workforce data to improve postsecondary programs and hold institutions and other state entities accountable; and – Where recent graduates have successfully found employment.
