  1. What is Metacognition? Reflecting on the way you think and

learn “.. Refers to one’s knowledge concerning one’s own cognitive processes or anything related to them.” ( John Flavell’s definition as cited by Tanner, 2012)
  2. Four Thinking Skills 1. Make distinction 2. Systems 3. Relationships

    4. Perspectives (Cabrera, 2011) https://youtu.be/dUqRTWCdXt4
  3. Distinction 1. Make distinction between ideas, objects, things…. define terms

and increase distinctions between terms Identity Other (Cabrera, 2011) Clinical Path Product design Where is your focus? What questions are you pursuing?
  4. Systems Thinking Look at the parts and the wholes that

make up systems ( reductionist vs holism) Both have value, how does each fit into the whole? (Cabrera, 2011) Part Whole
  5. Relationships Recognize relationships between and among ideas (Cabrera, 2011) Affect

Effect Phytochemistry Cellular Interactions Molecular biology Plant Morphology Environmental Interactions Plants Client Practitioner Plant
  6. Perspectives Taking different perspectives on and from things… -increases empathy,

compassion, spatial reasoning (Cabrera, 2011) subjective objective
  7. Meta-Cognition •What did you see? •What did you learn? •How

did you feel? •What approach did you take? •What influenced your learning/thinking?
  8. Critical Thinking How might your ongoing work with your ePortfolio

help you…… • identify a problem or research questions • collect and analyze data or information • draw meaningful conclusions from that analysis that informs decision making or solutions Activity: • Challenge one of the “facts” you learned in one of your classes with authoritative resources to back up your challenge
  9. Systems Thinking Recognize how the parts of something work together

to accomplish a goal.. How does all of your work come together to help you… • Create new questions and identify unknown information Activity: • Take 2 or 3 of your artifacts and summarize how they fit together. Then from this reflection create one new question you want to explore based on what you learned from the 2 or 3 courses.
  10. Examples of Using DSRP in Herbal Medicine Distinction: How is

traditional use of Black Cohosh different than its modern marketed use? System: Comparing the cellular action of an herb to its energetic use or how does a plant’s constituents guide medicine making Relationships: Our relationship with herbs and how our behavior impacts their use as medicine (ie product formulation, sustainable harvesting etc) Perspectives: Patient vs Practitioner, Traditional vs Biomedical
  11. Questions for Self Reflection What have I learned? Why did

I learn? When have I learned? In what circumstances? Under what conditions? How have I learned or not, and do I know what kind of learner I am? How does what I have learned fit into a full, continual plan for learning? What difference has learning made in my intellectual, personal, and ethical development? Where, when, and how have I engaged in integrative learning? Has my learning been connected and coherent? Is my learning relevant, applicable, practical? When, how, and why has my learning surprised me? What have been the proudest highlights of my learning? The disappointments? In what ways has my learning been valuable? What areas of herbal studies did I gain proficiency and what areas of herbal study do I still need more attention? (adapted from Zubizarreta , 2008)
